The 14 Spanish passengers who were\u00a0evacuated<\/a>\u00a0from the hantavirus-stricken MV Hondius cruise ship and who are now being quarantined in a hospital in Madrid will remain there for the World Health Organization\u2019s recommended 42-day period, Javier Padilla, Spain\u2019s secretary of state for health, said on Monday.<\/p>\n

Initially, the passengers will be isolated from both the outside world and each other.<\/p>\n

Their quarantine is currently scheduled to end on June 17<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe quarantine will be 42 days. That\u2019s what we\u2019ve been working on with the World Health Organization (WHO), and it will be 42 days,\u201d Padilla told Spain\u2019s national radio service, RNE<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 42-day period dates back to May 6, when authorities determined that measures imposed on the ship would \u201cbreak the chains of transmission,\u201d per Padilla, whose country\u00a0enforced one of the strictest lockdowns in the world in the earliest days of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Padilla said this following week of quarantine would be \u201cstricter\u201d, with the situation reassessed on a week-by-week basis, adding that the quarantined passengers currently \u201ctell us they are fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
