Brazil has renewed 16 distribution contracts and announced 130 billion reais for electricity distribution by 2030.

Expansions Underway
Neoenergia, the Brazilian subsidiary of Iberdrola, recently announced investments of 50 billion reais (about US$10.18 billion) in distribution assets across Brazil between 2026 and 2030. The announcement coincided with the renewal of three additional distribution concessions, Coelba, Cosern and Elektro, while Neoenergia Pernambuco already had been renewed in October 2025 until 2060.

According to Industrial Info Resources data, Neoenergia has 27 projects across Brazil, totalling investments of US$5.49 billion, and 19 active assets.

The 30-year concession renewal provides legal stability for Neoenergia to plan long-term capital-expenditure (capex) cycles. So far, Brazil has renewed 16 distribution contracts.

Neoenergia’s investment program is 82% higher than for the previous cycle (2021-25), when 27.5 billion reais (US$5.59 billion) were invested.

Of the 50 billion reais, 46% will be invested in expanding electricity infrastructure, and another 40% will be allocated to modernizing, digitizing and improving the network. The remaining 14% will be dedicated to combating energy losses and supporting operational infrastructure.

The funds will be destined to Neoenergia’s 17 million customers across the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.

Neoenergia’s Cosern subsidiary in Rio Grande do Norte was ranked by Brazil’s National Agency of Electricity as Brazil’s second-best distributor in 2025. Additionally, the company’s Coelba and Electro subsidiaries in other states were ranked eighth and eleventh, respectively.

Among the key investments highlighted by the company are the installation of 18 new substations and the expansion of 10 units in the state of Bahia, worth investments of 7 billion reais (about US$1.4 billion).

Industrial Info Resources is tracking 10 Neoenergia projects across the state of Bahia. These include the Barreiras Solar complex, substation and transmission line, and the Macurure project, which includes substations, transmission lines, and photovoltaic complexes.

For more information on these projects, the Industrial Info Resources Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database offers details–including capacities, investment values and necessary equipment–in reports on the Barreiras Solar and Macurure projects.

“The early renewal made possible by the government, through the Ministry of Mines and Energy, recognizes the consistency of our performance and creates conditions for us to continue investing with predictability, legal and regulatory certainty, and, above all, customer focus,” said Eduardo Capelastegui, the chief executive officer of Neoenergia, in a statement.

More than 130 Billion Reais for Distribution Modernization

Neoenergia’s announcement aligns with Brazil’s broader electricity distribution investments. On May 8, the government renewed 14 contracts (two had already been renewed earlier) for 16 energy distributors (including Neoenergia), announcing 130 billion reais (about US$26.44 billion) in investments by 2030 and more than 100,000 jobs.

“The renewal of these contracts demonstrates that the government has confidence in entrepreneurs and that we will not wait for the expiration date to ensure that the service continues to be provided in the best possible way,” said President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a statement. “We want to demand that everything that has been agreed upon is fulfilled, because in the end, Brazilian society is the one that benefits from this partnership.”

Key Takeaways

Neoenergia plans to invest 50 billion reais (U$10 billion) in distribution by 2030.
Neonergia’s distribution contracts were renewed for 30 years.
The Brazilian government forecasts 130 billion reais (US$26.44 billion) for distribution investments.

About Industrial Info Resources
Industrial Info Resources (IIR) is the leading provider of industrial market intelligence.
