{"id":26435,"date":"2026-05-19T17:58:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T17:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/26435\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T17:58:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T17:58:17","slug":"son-of-mango-fashion-chain-founder-arrested-in-spain-in-connection-with-fathers-death-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/26435\/","title":{"rendered":"Son of Mango fashion chain founder arrested in Spain in connection with father\u2019s death \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The son of Isak Andic, the founder of the fashion chain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mango\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mango\">Mango<\/a>, has been released on bail of \u20ac1 million after being arrested and questioned in connection with his father\u2019s death in Catalonia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\">Spain<\/a>, almost 18 months ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Andic died in December 2024 after apparently falling 100m down a ravine while hiking in Montserrat, near Barcelona, with his son, Jonathan. His death aged 71 prompted tributes to him from politicians, journalists and the fashion world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An initial investigation by the Catalan police, the Mossos d\u2019Esquadra, concluded the death was an accident, but officers and judicial sources told El Pa\u00eds and La Vanguardia last year that the case was being treated as a possible homicide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Tuesday, the Mossos d\u2019Esquadra said Jonathan Andic, who is now vice-chair of the Mango board, had been arrested and taken to appear before a judge in the Catalan city of Martorell. Photograph: AP <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court said the case was being \u201cinvestigated as a charge of homicide\u201d and ordered him to remain in Spain, surrender his passport and appear weekly before the judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokesperson for the family said they were confident of Jonathan Andic\u2019s innocence and they would continue to offer investigators their \u201ctotal co-operation\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">El Pa\u00eds reported last year that police had found no direct or definitive evidence to explain what happened in the ravine but had \u201ccome across a series of clues which, when taken together, had led them to move away from the idea of a mere accident and toward the possibility of a homicide\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">La Vanguardia reported that the judge overseeing the case changed Jonathan Andic\u2019s official status from witness to possible suspect in September last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The family issued a statement to the media at the time saying: \u201cThe Andic family has not and will not comment on Isak Andic\u2019s death in all these months. However, they wish to show their respect for the ongoing investigations and will continue to co-operate with the relevant authorities, as they have done so far. They are also confident that this process will be concluded as soon as possible and that Jonathan Andic\u2019s innocence will be proved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Isak Andic was born to a Sephardic Jewish family in Istanbul in 1953, emigrated to Catalonia with his relatives in the late 1960s and started selling T-shirts to fellow high school pupils.
