{"id":28447,"date":"2026-05-23T14:28:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T14:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/28447\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T14:28:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T14:28:08","slug":"tens-of-thousands-march-in-madrid-to-demand-prime-minister-sanchezs-resignation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/28447\/","title":{"rendered":"Tens of thousands march in Madrid to demand Prime Minister Sanchez&#8217;s resignation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least seven police officers were injured in clashes with protesters, officials said, as tens of thousands of people marched through Madrid on Saturday, demanding the resignation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/pedro-s%C3%A1nchez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez<\/a> after a series of corruption scandals.<\/p>\n<p>A small group of protesters tried to break through barriers around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-896383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sanchez&#8217;s residence<\/a> during the rally, which was otherwise largely peaceful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Police detained a group of masked people on the main road approaching the Moncloa Palace, where the Socialist leader lives with his family, images on Spanish television showed. Three people were arrested, police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Demonstrators carried banners marked with &#8220;Resignation of the socialist mafia&#8221; and other slogans, alongside scores of gold and red national flags in the &#8220;March for Dignity&#8221;, organized by the Spanish Civil Society association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Leaders from the opposition People&#8217;s Party and the far-right Vox party also took part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">A Spanish court announced on Tuesday that former Spanish Socialist prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was being investigated for allegedly leading an influence-peddling and money-laundering network, in another blow to the leftist government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Zapatero, a key ally of the current prime minister, denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-895592\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sanchez<\/a> briefly considered resigning in April 2024 after a judge opened an investigation into his wife, Bego\u00f1a Gomez. He has publicly defended his family, saying the cases are politically motivated and driven by far-right opponents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">She denies any wrongdoing, \u200band a Spanish prosecutor asked the investigating judge last month to close the case, which was brought by far-right groups.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers said 80,000 people took part in the protest.
