Aside from a historical relationship that began since the Island’s discovery, the business relationship between both Puerto Rico and Spain continues to grow, especially in recent years, with the European country becoming the second major destination for exports for the country.<\/p>\n
According to Governor Jenniffer Gonz\u00e1lez-Col\u00f3n, total trade between the two jurisdictions reached approximately $4.39 billion in 2025, including about $3.971 billion in exports from Puerto Rico to Spain. This represents approximately 6.4% of the Island’s total exports.<\/p>\n
\u201cSpain represents one of the most important strategic markets for Puerto Rico due to the real growth we are seeing in trade, investment and business collaboration,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Gonz\u00e1lez-Col\u00f3n also informed the European country is an important ally for the Island in investment opportunities, economic exchange and development that Spanish businesses can create on the Island.<\/p>\n
She also stated the new Spanish investments and projects developed in Puerto Rico have generated more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome infrastructure, energy, and construction projects have individually generated hundreds of jobs, while investments in retail, entertainment, and tourism have also strengthened local economic activity. For example, the new casino operated by a Spanish company in Old San Juan alone generates more than 200 jobs,\u201d the governor explained.<\/p>\n
According to Ricardo Ben\u00edtez, CEO of Gain Solutions, the trade relationship between Spain and Puerto Rico has strengthened in the last five years, with various sectors showing interest in the island.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs they see the caliber of professionals in Puerto Rico and the business opportunities on the island, they are identifying it as the place to protect their investments and the business relationships they currently have with the United States,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
When asked by W JOURNAL about what other companies are showing interest in the island and what attracts them, the CEO stated that aside from pharmaceuticals, professional services such as accounting, consulting, and legal services have attracted interest, with many seeking a connection between Spanish- and English-speaking markets.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Puerto Rico, we have an innate ability to ‘code-switch,’ so to speak, between the Anglo-Saxon and Latin mindsets. This manifests itself through support services. In Spain, there is a great need for companies that are growing tremendously, but it’s costing them perhaps twice as much as it would otherwise. This is because they have one team for the Anglo-Saxon market and another for the Hispanic market. In Puerto Rico, this is being achieved,\u201d Ben\u00edtez explained.<\/p>\n
The governor reported that the investment portfolio of Spanish companies is diversified across various sectors, including infrastructure, construction, energy, insurance, logistics, maritime transport, education, retail, technology, tourism, food, and services.<\/p>\n
Challenges<\/p>\n
Among the challenges facing trade relations, Ben\u00edtez cited a lack of preparedness in the industry as one of its challenges, which could also affect future investments.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, that\u2019s much more contagious than a success story. So, if you weren\u2019t well-prepared and had a misread or bad experience about the market, it could affect you, and it could also have a domino effect on other people who are looking at the Spanish market. So I think one of the main obstacles isn\u2019t whether there\u2019s interest or not\u2014it really is whether there is interest\u2014but you have to understand who you\u2019re going to talk to,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
As for the governor, she stated the diplomatic and trade relations between the two markets are very strong, and with upcoming events happening in Spain, they hope to see more Spanish businesses arriving on the island.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Government of Puerto Rico has been consistent in maintaining this relationship through trade missions, bilateral forums, meetings with Spanish companies, and a more structured presence in the European market, so that our local companies can continue expanding into Europe,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n
