The Spanish navy<\/a> has reported that the Maritime Action Vessel (BAM) \u2018Rayo\u2019, during its Presence, Surveillance and Deterrence (OPVD) operations, has tracked and monitored units of the Russian Federation Navy (RFN) as they transited the Mediterranean Sea towards the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the escorted units consisted of a corvette, a frigate and a supply vessel, which were accompanying two merchant ships<\/a> as they sailed towards the western Mediterranean. The detection and subsequent tracking of the Russian units began south of Mallorca<\/a>, coinciding with their entry into Spanish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) waters.<\/p>\n

From that point onwards, the BAM \u2018Rayo\u2019 maintained continuous surveillance of the vessels during their transit through the Alboran Sea and their passage through the Strait of Gibraltar<\/a>, ending the tracking operation when the vessels reached the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone. These actions form part of the Navy\u2019s permanent missions aimed at ensuring maritime security<\/a>, preserving freedom of navigation and contributing to collective deterrence within the Atlantic Alliance.<\/p>\n

The Maritime Operational Command (MOM) is a body within the operational structure of the Armed Forces, subordinate to the Chief of the Defence Staff (JEMAD), responsible, at its level, for the planning, conduct and monitoring of operations involving presence, surveillance and deterrence in maritime areas of sovereignty, responsibility and national interest. It is under the command of the Admiral of Maritime Operations (ALMART), Vice-Admiral Vicente Cuquerella Gamboa, and is headquartered in Cartagena.<\/p>\n

As part of the MOM, various Navy vessels carry out, under the operational control of the Operations Command, Presence, Surveillance and Deterrence Operations (OPVD), which are an effective tool for maintaining surveillance of areas of sovereignty and interest. This enables an increased understanding of the maritime environment, contributes to its comprehensive protection \u2014 alongside other state institutions \u2014 and also allows for the early detection of threats and facilitates an immediate and viable response to a potential crisis.<\/p>\n

Together with the MOM, the Land (MOT), Air (MOA), Space (MOESPA) and Cyberspace (MOC) Operational Commands make up the structure of the Permanent Commands.
