May 27 (Reuters) – Spain wants EU member states to retain a say over which countries, suppliers \u200cor products can be barred from infrastructure projects \u200cunder a stronger European Cybersecurity Act whose overall direction it supports, a government \u200bspokesperson said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson at the digital transformation ministry told Reuters the issue touched on national sovereignty, as set out in EU treaties.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The comments come as \u200cthe European Commission \u2060plans a revision of the Cybersecurity Act to phase out components and equipment from high-risk \u2060suppliers in critical sectors.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The plan is expected to affect Chinese companies including Huawei.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The proposals, still under negotiation, \u200bwould give \u200bBrussels the power to \u200bban the use of \u200cequipment from high-risk suppliers in the EU market.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Spain backs strengthening the Cybersecurity Act but wants it done within a legally sound framework consistent with the division of powers in EU treaties, the ministry said.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Any classification \u200cof suppliers should be based on \u200bobjective, proportionate and workable technical \u200bcriteria, ensuring legal certainty \u200band respect for national sovereignty, the ministry \u200cadded.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Earlier in May, the \u200bCommission recommended \u200bthat member states exclude Huawei and ZTE technology from local telecom operators’ connectivity infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Last year, Spain \u200bcancelled a fibre-optic \u200cservice contract with Telefonica over the use of \u200bHuawei equipment.<\/p>\n
