{"id":3097,"date":"2026-04-13T05:53:27","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T05:53:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/3097\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T05:53:27","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T05:53:27","slug":"sevilla-orange-marmalade-forced-to-change-name-for-uk-shelves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/3097\/","title":{"rendered":"Sevilla orange marmalade forced to change name for UK shelves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MADE with bitter Sevilla oranges, it\u2019s famous as the favourite preserve of iconic children\u2019s literature character Paddington Bear.<\/p>\n<p>But jars of marmalade will soon look very different on UK supermarket shelves following the implementation of a new post-Brexit food deal.<\/p>\n<p>Under the agreement, the fruity spread will have to be sold as \u2018citrus marmalade\u2019, with the British government moving to align more closely with European Union rules in a bid to boost trade and cut red tape.<\/p>\n<p>The change comes as Brussels pushes ahead with plans to broaden the legal definition of marmalade across the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, only preserves made from citrus fruits could be sold as \u2018marmalade\u2019, with other kinds of fruit spread labelled as \u2018jam\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>That was the result of British lobbying in the 1970s to grant marmalade cut from Sevilla oranges a special commercial status.<\/p>\n<p>But the distinction has long caused widespread confusion across Europe, including in Spain where the term \u2018mermelada\u2019 is used to describe spreads made from a range of different fruits, including figs and plums.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theolivepress.es\/spain-news\/2023\/12\/16\/can-i-eat-oranges-from-trees-that-are-planted-in-streets-and-towns-across-spain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Can I eat oranges from trees that are planted in streets and towns across Spain?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"424\" height=\"283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/seville-oranges.jpg\" alt=\"seville oranges\" class=\"wp-image-14742\"  \/>Traditional British marmalade is made from bitter Sevilla oranges.
