UNESCO<\/a> has warned that a tsunami striking the Mediterranean is no longer a question of \u201cif\u201d but \u201cwhen\u201d, with experts saying there is a certainty of at least one metre-high waves hitting somewhere in the region within the next 30 to 50 years.<\/p>\n

Spain<\/a>\u2019s Balearic Islands<\/a> and parts of the Valencian coastline have been identified among the areas at risk in the western Mediterranean, alongside coastal regions in Greece<\/a>, Italy<\/a>, Turkey, France, Portugal and North Africa.<\/p>\n

Although tsunami waves in the Mediterranean are unlikely to resemble the devastating scale seen in parts of the Pacific, scientists say even relatively small waves can cause serious damage in densely populated coastal areas packed with beaches, ports, hotels and tourist infrastructure.<\/p>\n

UNESCO said tsunamis in the region are typically triggered by underwater earthquakes or volcanic activity and often arrive as a series of waves rather than a single surge. Experts also warn the first wave is not always the strongest, with later waves and dangerous currents capable of flooding harbours, damaging buildings and sweeping people into the sea.<\/p>\n

Greece remains the Mediterranean country most exposed to tsunami risk because of intense seismic activity around Crete and the Aegean Sea, where tectonic plates meet beneath the eastern Mediterranean. Southern Italy, particularly Sicily and the Strait of Messina, is also considered highly vulnerable following devastating historical events including the 1908 earthquake and tsunami disaster.<\/p>\n

In the western Mediterranean, Spain faces a lower but still significant threat, especially in the Balearics and along sections of the Valencian coast. Experts say tsunamis affecting Spain could originate from seismic activity in northern Africa, particularly Algeria and Morocco. Portugal and southern France are also considered vulnerable because of tectonic activity beneath the Mediterranean and north-eastern Atlantic.<\/p>\n

Countries across the region are now part of UNESCO\u2019s Mediterranean tsunami warning system, designed to issue rapid alerts when undersea earthquakes occur. But scientists warn the geography of the Mediterranean leaves little reaction time, with tsunami waves potentially reaching nearby coastlines in as little as 20 to 40 minutes after an earthquake.<\/p>\n

That means coastal residents and tourists may need to rely on natural warning signs \u2014 particularly strong or prolonged earthquakes near the coast \u2014 before official alerts are issued.
