{"id":31513,"date":"2026-05-29T14:43:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T14:43:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/31513\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T14:43:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T14:43:37","slug":"riquelme-vows-to-renovate-stadium-if-elected-real-madrid-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/31513\/","title":{"rendered":"Riquelme vows to renovate stadium if elected Real Madrid president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Enrique Riquelme has promised to upgrade the Alfredo Di St\u00e9fano Stadium capacity to 20,000 if he is elected president of Real Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish club is set to host the presidential election on June 7 with current president Florentino P\u00e9rez facing opposition for the role for the first time since 2006.<\/p>\n<p>His competitor, Riquelme, has vowed to increase the capacity of the 5,967-seat venue which is used by Real Madrid Femenino and Real Madrid Castilla.<\/p>\n<p>Riquelme is also proposing that the Santiago Bernab\u00e9u hosts women\u2019s games for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>New arena and more<\/p>\n<p>The Alfredo Di St\u00e9fano Stadium upgrade would be part of the \u201cMember City\u201d project which would feature a members-only social club, a hotel, a new 15,000-seat basketball arena and expanded facilities for the women\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the biggest transformation for and by the members in Real Madrid\u2019s history,\u201d Riquelme said, as reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxdeportes.com\/la-liga\/nota\/iniciaron-las-promesas-de-enrique-riquelme-en-el-real-madrid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.foxdeportes.com\/la-liga\/nota\/iniciaron-las-promesas-de-enrique-riquelme-en-el-real-madrid&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1780053363959000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0tocJdjtFdzdloL8hjCmFx\">Fox Deportes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a project that, for the first time, considers the club\u2019s owners, not privatisation or selling the club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a project by and for its members and a place for community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith our project, Real Madrid, if I am president, will once again belong to its members. Real Madrid is global, but the club belongs to the members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Riquelme\u2019s plan would also see the creation of a plaza for 25,000 people where the team\u2019s matches could be followed on a giant screen, a 22,000 square meter clubhouse, an outdoor aquatic centre, an auditorium for events for 1,500 attendees, 11 football pitches, 41 padel and tennis courts, and six basketball courts.<\/p>\n<p>He also pledged to cut membership fees by 50% and make 10,000 season tickets available through a lottery to cut the number of members \u201cholding for years in a waiting list\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the 1950s, Real Madrid was a members\u2019 club,\u201d Riquelme said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe members felt they were part of something. They knew they were the ones in charge.
