{"id":33025,"date":"2026-06-01T22:16:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T22:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/33025\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T22:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T22:16:11","slug":"father-of-two-died-of-extreme-heat-in-azusa-police-car-officials-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/33025\/","title":{"rendered":"Father of two died of extreme heat in Azusa police car, officials say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 37-year-old father of two who was found inside a police patrol vehicle outside the Azusa Police Department in March died from extreme heat, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Valencia\u2019s death was ruled as accidental and his cause of death was listed as hyperthermia, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner. <\/p>\n<p>Valencia\u2019s family has called for an investigation to determine why police did not check the parked patrol vehicle at the Azusa police facility and whether Valencia was in a stable condition when he was released after his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it was hyperthermia that caused Eric\u2019s death, it\u2019s extremely sad to hear that Eric suffered tremendously in the back of that Azusa police department patrol car for three days before he died,\u201d Michael Carrillo, an attorney for Valencia\u2019s family, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric\u2019s family is still grieving this loss and they are shocked and saddened by this finding,\u201d according to the statement. \u201cThis could have been prevented by the simple task of locking the patrol car or looking inside it. We also note that the autopsy did not include a toxicology screening. We will be investigating why that is, because it leaves significant unanswered questions that need to be addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance video provided by police shows Valencia after he\u2019s released from jail around 1 p.m. March 23, according to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/azusa-police-release-footage-man-found-dead-patrol-car\/18808846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">KABC. <\/a>He can be seen walking up to a parked patrol vehicle outside the station, getting into the back and shutting <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-03-27\/azusa-police-body-found-investigation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the door behind him<\/a>. Law enforcement vehicles typically cannot be unlocked from the back seats.<\/p>\n<p>Valencia had been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and child endangerment on March 20 and held over the weekend before being released, said Azusa Police Chief Rocky Wenrick at a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Valencia was released from custody with no apparent signs of distress,\u201d Wenrick said during the conference, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/azusa-police-release-footage-man-found-dead-patrol-car\/18808846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to KABC.<\/a> \u201cSurveillance video shows Mr. Valencia unlawfully entering the rear seat area of patrol unit 37.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valencia was initially pulled over for driving without his car\u2019s headlights on, and police suspected he was under the influence, saying he had watery, bloodshot eyes and the car smelled of alcohol, Wenrick <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxla.com\/news\/azusa-police-car-death-eric-valencia-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told Fox during an interview.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two children, ages 3 and 11, were in the car with Valencia, Wenrick added. Valencia had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit during his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Valencia was freed on March 23 and given his property, cellphone and food, according to Wenrick.
