June 1 (Reuters) – China’s SAIC Motor Corp plans to set up a car factory in Spain’s northwestern region of \u200cGalicia that would be its first production facility in the \u200cEuropean Union, the regional government said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Galicia’s leader Alfonso Rueda said \u200bhis administration had given strategic priority to the project, with an initial investment envisaged at around \u20ac200 million.<\/p>\n
The project, which includes a logistics hub, still requires the central government’s approval for foreign direct investment.<\/p>\n
SAIC \u200cowns the MG brand, \u2060which is popular in Europe and prioritises electrified powertrains.<\/p>\n
The plant in the port of Ferrol should \u2060create about 1,000 direct jobs and more indirect ones, and will use many locally produced components, the government said in a \u200bstatement.<\/p>\n
Provided all \u200bnecessary approvals are in place \u200bby then, construction should \u200cstart next year and the plant would become operational in 2028, according to Rueda.<\/p>\n
When a second phase is complete, the plant will be able to produce 120,000 cars a year.<\/p>\n
Several Chinese car manufacturers are planning to start production in Spain, which has one \u200cof Europe’s largest car-making industries. Chinese \u200bcarmakers have gained market share in \u200bSpain amid an aggressive \u200bprice war by EV makers worldwide.<\/p>\n
China’s Chery <9973.HK>, in \u200ca joint venture with Spanish \u200bcarmaker EBRO, plans \u200bto start making cars at a former Nissan plant in Barcelona at the end of this year or the \u200bfirst quarter of \u200c2027. The Chery-Ebro venture said in 2024 it would \u200baim to produce up to 150,000 vehicles a year \u200bby 2029.<\/p>\n
