In late February 2026, a lofty stainless-steel cross coated in white enameled ceramic was placed atop<\/a> the central Tower of Jesus Christ<\/a> of La Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/a>, the great basilica in Barcelona<\/a> envisioned over a century ago by the Catalan Modernista architect Antoni Gaud\u00ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The installation completes the 566-foot-high tower, making it the world\u2019s tallest church\u2014a key milestone in the building\u2019s ongoing construction that coincides with the 100-year anniversary of the visionary architect\u2019s untimely death.<\/p>\n

La Sagrada Fam\u00edlia exemplifies the organic shapes and flowing forms for which Gaud\u00ed\u2014who held a strong religious faith throughout his life\u2014became known. Its soaring interior evokes a dense forest through carefully slanted stone pillars, while countless human faces (based on real people) adorn the Nativity Fa\u00e7ade, the only one completed during his lifetime.<\/p>\n

\u201cNature is integrated into his earliest buildings as imitation or symbolism, and in his more mature works, also ends up helping to create spaces and structures,\u201d says Barcelona-based architect Miguel Angel Borr\u00e1s<\/a>, partner at Miel Arquitectos and Barcelona Architecture Walks<\/a>. \u201cGaud\u00ed\u2019s constant search for the essence of architecture through lessons from living organisms and natural minerals enabled him to become timeless and futuristic at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

The church may be Gaud\u00ed\u2019s most famous work, but he created landmark buildings throughout the elegant Eixample district, which took form in the 1860s with broad new boulevards, a grid-like design, and waves of ground-breaking architecture. His work also pops up in many other corners of the city, showcasing widely varied influences, interests, and styles. Here are a few noteworthy stops.<\/p>\n

Casa Batll\u00f3<\/p>\n

It\u2019s impossible to miss the shimmering, wave-like shape of Casa Batll\u00f3<\/a> along Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia in the heart of the Eixample. The UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/a> is among Gaud\u00ed\u2019s premier creations, uniting function, beauty, and technical innovation in a residential building that appears to be moving and even breathing.<\/p>\n

The undulating fa\u00e7ade features trencad\u00eds tilework\u2014a Gaud\u00ed signature made using broken leftover mosaics\u2014in blue and purple hues and balconies shaped like masks or with bone-like stone pillars.<\/p>\n

Throughout the structure, and especially in the curving rooftop, many experts see references to the legend of Catalonia\u2019s patron saint Sant Jordi<\/a>, famed for rescuing a small town terrorized by a dragon.<\/p>\n

Casa Mil\u00e1 (La Pedrera)<\/p>\n

This 1910 masterpiece on Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia is known by its nickname La Pedrera<\/a> (The Quarry) for its unusual stone fa\u00e7ade. With chimney stacks resembling medieval knights, some decorated with broken cava bottles, and wavy balconies forged with wrought iron resembling surging seaweed, La Pedrera was locally ridiculed during Gaud\u00ed\u2019s time. But with Casa Mil\u00e1, \u201cGaud\u00ed created a paradox: an artificial but natural building which was simultaneously a summary of all the forms that he has since become famous for,\u201d writes author Rainer Zerbst in Gaud\u00ed, The Complete Works<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Commissioned by the businessman Pere Mil\u00e0 and his wife Rosario Segimon, La Pedrera was the first building in Barcelona to have an underground parking space<\/a> and the last major project the architect took on before turning his focus to La Sagrada Fam\u00edlia.<\/p>\n

Casa Vicens<\/p>\n

The village-like neighborhood of Gr\u00e0cia is known for its buzzing squares and vermouth bars, but it\u2019s also home to Gaud\u00ed\u2019s first independent commission: the UNESCO-recognized, 1880s Casa Vicens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The former summer home of a local businessman, the mansion takes inspiration from Spain\u2019s Islamic architecture heritage and styles from across Asia. With flowing shapes, bold colors, and distinctive green-and-yellow tiles depicting marigold flowers, it\u2019s a stunning vision of nature-rooted motifs. Less visited than some of the architect\u2019s more famous later buildings, Casa Vicens offers a closer look at the beginnings of Gaud\u00ed\u2019s signature flourishes, including a usable rooftop with tile-covered turrets.<\/p>\n

\u201cGaud\u00ed\u2019s goal was to bring the outdoors indoors,\u201d says Suzanne Wales, co-founder of Barcelona Design Tours<\/a> and author of Made in Spain<\/a>. \u201cIn the Casa Vicens, he did this more with decorative elements rather than the organic forms we see in his later work. The home\u2019s signature marigold tiles, for example, were inspired by the fields of flowers that once surrounded it. Another standout are the sun screens on the front terrace, which were influenced by Japanese design and still look incredibly modern.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Park G\u00fcell<\/p>\n

Just north of Gr\u00e0cia, Park G\u00fcell<\/a> ranks among Barcelona\u2019s most popular attractions. Today a green space with a few curvaceous buildings, Park G\u00fcell served as the architect\u2019s home base for much of the time he worked on La Sagrada Fam\u00edlia. It was conceived in 1900 as an exclusive garden city, but the project was canceled 14 years in with just two main structures completed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A sprawling plaza overlooking Barcelona\u2019s skyline anchors the complex, surrounded by a rippling trencad\u00eds bench, galleries of leaning stone pillars, and sunny Mediterranean gardens. Gaud\u00ed\u2019s former home within the park is now a monument, the Casa Museu Gaud\u00ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Palau G\u00fcell<\/p>\n

It\u2019s rare to find Gaud\u00ed\u2019s footprint in Barcelona\u2019s Ciutat Vella (Old City), yet the 1888-completed Palau G\u00fcell<\/a> sits just off tourism-heavy La Rambla<\/a>, in the El Raval district. This was Gaud\u00ed\u2019s inaugural commission for the industrialist Eusebi G\u00fcell, who went on to become his main patron with landmark projects like Park G\u00fcell and the Col\u00f2nia G\u00fcell, a textile-producing village that was never finished.<\/p>\n

Among the Palau\u2019s most elaborate features are a mosaic-studded rooftop, the brick-built basement stables, and a ceiling organ recreated with fragments from Gaud\u00ed\u2019s original design.<\/p>\n

Nearby Bar Marsella\u2014a long-running absinthe-fueled El Raval haunt\u2014is known as a favorite with Gaud\u00ed and other great creative minds. Just across La Rambla, don\u2019t miss Pla\u00e7a Reial<\/a>\u2019s collection of six-armed cast-iron streetlamps, also dreamed up by Gaud\u00ed.<\/p>\n

Casa Calvet<\/p>\n

A few blocks from Casa Batll\u00f3 in Eixample Dreta, the Baroque-inspired Casa Calvet<\/a> monument is a curious early work. Built in 1899 for textile manufacturer Pere M\u00e0rtir Calvet, with wrought-iron balconies jutting out from the Montju\u00efc-stone<\/a> fa\u00e7ade, it features a comparatively conservative design allowing for business outlets at street level and the family home above.<\/p>\n

Baroque-inspired Casa Calvet is still used for its original purpose, as a residential building, with businesses on the ground floor.<\/p>\n

Of all Gaud\u00ed\u2019s residential buildings, it\u2019s the only one still used for its original purpose and to receive an award during his lifetime. The ground level now houses an outpost of prize-winning Spanish coffee roaster D\u2022Origen<\/a> brewing flat whites made with their Calvet blend.<\/p>\n

Torre Bellesguard<\/p>\n

In the affluent, less-touristed Sarri\u00e0 district of northwest Barcelona, near the Collserola hills<\/a>, Torre Bellesguard<\/a> pairs Modernisme flourishes with Neo-Gothic austerity. Constructed between 1900 and 1909 on the site of a ruined 15th-century castle, the mansion (often called Casa Figueras) stands out among Gaud\u00ed\u2019s other creations for its straight lines and narrow, fortress-like stone tower.<\/p>\n

A few remnants of the original medieval castle were creatively repurposed into the current building, while details like the four-armed mosaic cross, the intricate ironwork, and a pair of dragon eyes hidden in plain sight are pure Gaud\u00edan fantasy.<\/p>\n
