That feeling is enhanced when the starlet progresses through the academy but excitement is also sparked when a club signs a talented youngster. The importance of developing young players is so important with many clubs’ business model centring around selling starlets for vast profits.

Benfica, RB Leipzig and Rennes have developed reputations as some of the best clubs across Europe to develop conveyor belts of talents. Increasingly, the biggest clubs in the world will poach players at a young age from smaller academies and this can be a huge source of frustration. Scouts are dispatched all around the world with the aim of unearthing future superstars with enormous potential to become first-team stars. With the 2025/26 season now concluded across the top five leagues, we’ve analysed which clubs have handed the most minutes to U21 players this season.

Which clubs handed the most minutes to U21 players last season?

Ligue 1 is the leading top five league for providing most opportunities to youngsters and for the second season in a row, Strasbourg tops the list. Incredibly, the French club used 22 different U21 players across the course of last season and they totalled 28,765 minutes across all competitions. Strasbourg’s policy of developing youngsters is well-documented with their two most used U21 stars last season, Mike Penders and Valentín Barco, likely to be playing at Chelsea next season, BlueCo’s premier club. As the graphic below illustrates, Strasbourg are close to double second placed PSG (15,285) with Nice (13,479) completing the top three.

Chelsea are the only Premier League club in the top ten, which shouldn’t be a major surprise given their ownership structure’s insistence on signing young players. Interestingly, the only two LaLiga clubs in the top twenty list are the biggest two in Spain, Barcelona (11,487) and Real Madrid (10,543). Como’s development under Cesc Fabregas has been unbelievable and youth has been central to their excellence and they rank fifth. Leipzig are the leading Bundesliga outfit in 10th and Ligue 1’s reputation for showing faith in youth is evidenced by having six clubs in the top ten.

Which clubs handed the fewest minutes to U21 players last season?

Antonio Conte is notorious for his reliance on experience and not entrusting young players. It’s therefore no surprise that Napoli rank lowest across all top five league clubs with just two U21 players used last season with a total of 133 minutes. Valencia rank second and St Pauli in third with the Bundesliga side only using one U21 player as they were relegated. Leeds United were the lowest Premier League club with Brest taking that title for Ligue 1.

                                        Note:
When you search for something on Google, you’ll see a box with the latest news alongside the usual results.
