{"id":36869,"date":"2026-06-08T16:30:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T16:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/36869\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T16:30:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T16:30:13","slug":"pope-leo-xiv-meets-with-abuse-victims-in-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/36869\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo XIV meets with abuse victims in Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During his third day in the Spanish capital of Madrid, Pope Leo XIV holds a private meeting with victims of abuse by members of the clergy in Spain.<\/p>\n<p>By Deborah Castellano Lubov and Salvatore Cernuzio<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV had a meeting on Monday with victims of abuse by members of the clergy in Spain, stated Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, on Telegram.<\/p>\n<p>In the message, Bruni noted that the Holy Father met with six abuse victims who were accompanied by Church personnel engaged in supporting and accompanying victims.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the conversation, which lasted nearly an hour,&#8221; the Holy See Press Office Director noted, &#8220;each of those present, drawing on their own painful personal experiences, offered the Pope a number of proposals aimed at making the Church\u2019s response to such tragic cases more effective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Pope,&#8221; Bruni continued, &#8220;listened with affection and attentiveness, assured them of his closeness\u2014as well as that of the entire ecclesial community\u2014and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the proposals received serve as a foundation for further efforts, so that the Church may truly be a safe and spiritually healthy place where wounds can find comfort and healing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bruni also noted that &#8220;The victims felt that the Pope had taken their suffering upon himself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Holy See Press Office Director had confirmed this encounter would take place prior to the Pope&#8217;s departure from Rome, explaining that it was\u00a0organized by the local Church, noting that further details would be given soon, with respect for the privacy of the victims.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of abuse remains a painful one for the Spanish Church, which in recent years has implemented various initiatives aimed at prevention and reparation.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, in March, a protocol was agreed upon by the Spanish Episcopal Conference, the Conference of Religious, and the Ministry of the Presidency to address this painful reality with truth and justice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV&#8217;s private, closed-door dialogue was similar in style to those of his predecessors.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Benedict XVI met with abuse victims during his visits to the United States in 2008, as well as to the United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis also held similar meetings during his travels to Ireland, Chile, Portugal, and Belgium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"During his third day in the Spanish capital of Madrid, Pope Leo XIV holds a private meeting with&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":36870,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[2656,9489,70,17],"class_list":["post-36869","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-spain","tag-abuse","tag-apostolic-journey","tag-pope-leo-xiv","tag-spain"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/36869","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=36869"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/36869\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/36870"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=36869"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=36869"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=36869"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
