Ferrer explained that the measures aim to curb the most polluting and energy-intensive form of transport, as well as addressing the fact that this is a privileged sector where social inequalities are evident.

He also pointed out that Ibiza Airport, fowllowed by Mallorca, has the highest volume of private jet traffic in Spain. “It is true that total emissions from private aviation account for only between 2 and 4 per cent of the sector’s overall emissions (2012–2023), but these aircraft emit an average of two tonnes of CO2 per hour into the atmosphere, that is, 14 times more than the emissions of a standard commercial flight or 50 times more than those of rail transport,” he explained.

The senator also referred in his speech to the consequences of global warming and climate change. At the end of last year, the Spanish Prime Minister, announced that Spain will contribute an additional €45 million to the fight against climate change and offered his country’s support to move forward on this path and address the risk posed by climate change deniers.

He stressed that the climate emergency is killing people and that this is not ideology, but science. He said it is a shame that there are still those who deny or downplay its impact, although he acknowledged that ‘no amount of empirical evidence, however overwhelming, is capable of changing the opinion of those who have chosen to blindfold themselves’.

He addressed those who do believe in science and ‘have the moral courage to fight the battle’, those who ‘do not give up or regulate themselves out of political calculation or fear of being devoured by denialist forces. To all of them I want to say that they can count on Spain. And we do so out of moral conviction, because we honour our word, but above all because we believe in the green transition as an engine of growth and transformation,’ he added.

Pedro Sánchez, has backed an initiative to create a new tax on first-class airline tickets and the use of private jets. ‘Spain is delivering,’ said the Prime Minister, who provided data such as the €1.7 billion allocated last year to international climate finance. He also assured that Spain will continue to work with other countries to tax premium class flights and private jets because he believes it is fair that those who have more and pollute more should pay their fair share.

The Senate’s Committee on Transport and Sustainable Mobility has approved a motion by the senator for the Pitiusas…

[2
596,1254,1512,158,597,16233,598,9245,599,600,17891,17892,17,1394,357
post-37426","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-spain","tag-airport","tag-balearics","tag-climate-change","tag-emissions","tag-flight","tag-global-warming","tag-holiday","tag-ibiza","tag-majorca","tag-mallorca","tag-pollution","tag-private-jets","tag-spain","tag-tax","tag-travel
["GET
