They are now locked in a legal battle, especially after Barcelona filed a conciliation request against Perez.

This comes after Real Madrid tried to bring UEFA into the equation, hoping that an investigation done by the European football governing body could lead to some form of ban on Barcelona.

However, according to La Vanguardia, UEFA has reiterated that it will not get involved in the Negreira affair until the Spanish courts have issued a definitive ruling on the matter.

Florentino’s dossier on hold

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.europesays.com/spain/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/spain-v-croatia-group-b-uefa-euro-2024-2-1-1024x683.jpg" alt="BERLIN, GERMANY - JUNE 15: Aleksander Ceferin, President of UEFA, reacts prior to the UEFA EURO 2024 group stage match between Spain and Croatia at Olympiastadion on June 15, 2024 in Berlin, Germany. (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)

The dossier in question was the one Florentino Perez referenced at his explosive press conference on May 12, when he announced elections and launched a sustained attack on Barcelona over the Negreira case.

Perez claimed the document, which he said the club had been preparing for two years, outlined Real Madrid’s position on the alleged irregularities and called on UEFA to take action beyond whatever might arise from the ongoing criminal proceedings.

However, UEFA’s position means that no action will be taken at the European level while the case remains before the Spanish judicial system.

Barcelona file conciliation request against Perez

As mentioned earlier, Barcelona officially filed a preliminary conciliation request against Perez on Friday, in response to the comments he made at that same May 12 press conference.

The action is a precursor to a potential lawsuit for alleged defamation under Article 205 of the Spanish Penal Code.

Barcelona want Perez to retract statements they consider “slanderous and offensive” to the club’s image, comments they allege were made “knowingly and falsely.”

A summons for the conciliation hearing is not expected before September. At that hearing, Perez will have three options: not to attend, to attend in person, or to send a legal representative on his behalf.

Perez’s press conference started it all.
