{"id":4154,"date":"2026-04-14T08:49:01","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T08:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/4154\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T08:49:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T08:49:01","slug":"xi-and-sanchez-say-china-and-spain-should-help-safeguard-multilateralism-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/4154\/","title":{"rendered":"Xi and S\u00e1nchez say China and Spain should help safeguard multilateralism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BEIJING (AP) \u2014 The leaders of China and Spain on Tuesday pledged to strengthen their relations and work to safeguard multilateralism at a time when the world is being impacted by various conflicts, including the recent <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-trump-lebanon-blockade-hormuz-april-13-2026-ed7a6cd4bc61dc47f317a2c82afcc1c9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war in Iran<\/a>, during a meeting in Beijing on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should strengthen communication, consolidate mutual trust, cooperate closely, oppose the world\u2019s retrogression to the law of the jungle, and jointly safeguard genuine multilateralism,\u201d said Chinese President Xi Jinping during a reception for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez at the Great Hall of the People.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez agreed and said both countries \u201ccan contribute to finding solutions to the various trade tensions that exist, to the geopolitical difficulties and complexities of today\u2019s world, to the wars, to the environmental and social challenges that afflict the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez is in China for his <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spain-china-xi-jinping-iran-trump-war-d53d0157078c1aabc4f022f8553ea8d7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fourth trip in just over three years<\/a> to the world\u2019s second-largest economy.<\/p>\n<p>Spain is looking to strengthen its political and commercial ties with Beijing, and the visit comes as S\u00e1nchez faces a strained relationship with the U.S. over his opposition to the war in Iran. <\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez sees China as key to end the war<\/p>\n<p>Later, during a press conference, S\u00e1nchez said that China was the only global player he could see helping end wars in Iran and other places, such as Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it very difficult to find other interlocutors, beyond China, who can resolve this situation in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d Pedro S\u00e1nchez said, urging the Asian giant to do more on the diplomatic front.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez said that his country wants to avoid impunity for those who commit crimes in places like Gaza, where he said a \u201cgenocide\u201d has been committed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational law is being violated today, fundamentally by one country: the government of Israel,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is also an absolutely illegal response from the Iranian regime regarding a war that we have described from the very beginning as a mistake and an illegality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez has been one of Europe\u2019s loudest critics of the U.S. and Israel\u2019s military actions in the Middle East.
