Cape Verde holds Spain to \u2018shocking\u2019 0-0 World Cup tie
\nPolymarket trader turns $428,000 bet into $4.7 million
\nAnother Loses $1 million on \u2018surefire\u2019 bet<\/p>\n

They say there\u2019s no such thing as a surefire bet, but a wager on reigning World Cup champions Spain beating tiny tournament debutante Cape Verde was probably about as close as it gets \u2013 or so we all thought.<\/p>\n

One Polymarket trader clearly agreed, lumping $1 million on the outcome, probably thinking it would be the easiest $85,000 they ever made, which would have been the expected payout had Spain actually done what it was supposed to do.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for the trader, Cape Verde didn\u2019t read the script. Despite firing 27 shots at their opponents\u2019 goal, seven on target, the reigning champs were held to a 0-0 tie by the plucky islanders.<\/p>\n

The tears streaming down the face of Cape Verde\u2019s heroic 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha, at the final whistle may end up being one of the tournament\u2019s most memorable moments.<\/p>\n

Cape Verde, an archipelagic country off the coast of West Africa with a population of about 500,000, was dynamic and organized out of possession \u2013 which it was a lot \u2013 and played with a discipline and fearlessness that belied its status as one of the tournament\u2019s lowest-ranked teams.<\/p>\n

Biggest Shock? Not Even Close<\/p>\n

This prompted The Athletic to ponder this morning whether this was \u201cthe World Cup\u2019s biggest shock.\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t. That was probably when Italy was beaten 1-0 by North Korea in 1966. Or reigning champions Argentina losing to Cameroon in 1990. Or Brazil getting thumped 7-1 in the semis.<\/p>\n

Even the Cape Verde result wasn\u2019t a complete surprise to everyone. Because another Polymarket trader turned $428,000 into $4.7 million by betting on Spain not to win. They say a tie is like kissing your sister. Try telling that to that guy.<\/p>\n

Why would anyone risk $428,000 on an eventuality that \u2014 on the face of it, at least \u2014 feels so unlikely to happen?<\/p>\n

Was the Game Mispriced?<\/p>\n

The most probable explanation is that the trader believed the odds, 9% at the time of the trade, were wrong. Professional gamblers and traders hunt for odds they believe are mispriced. And while risking $428,000 on Spain failing to win sounds reckless, those with large portfolios often spread risk across multiple markets and hedge positions elsewhere.<\/p>\n

What appeared to be a moonshot may have been just one position in a much bigger strategy. If they believed that the probability of Spain failing to win was greater than 9%, then it was a \u201cgood\u201d bet.<\/p>\n

The trader may have had a better understanding than the rest of the market of Cape Verde\u2019s defending capabilities, and of Spain\u2019s occasional habit of starting a tournament slowly.<\/p>\n

In 2010, for example, again while reigning champions, Spain lost its first game 1-0 to Switzerland, before proceeding to beat everything else in sight and lift the trophy again.<\/p>\n

Despite the hiccup, Spain remains a co-favorite with France to win the World Cup at +600 (6\/1) with most traditional sportsbooks, although Polymarket currently gives France a slight edge, 17% to Spain\u2019s 14%.<\/p>\n
