2050+ reimagines a parking lot as public sporting infrastructure<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Selected through the Ephemeral Agents international open call for the 2026 edition of Conc\u00e9ntrico<\/a>, Frontones Danzantes is a temporary installation<\/a> by 2050+ <\/a>that transforms the Aparcamiento del Revell\u00edn in Logro\u00f1o, Spain<\/a>, into an open-air playground. The project draws on the traditions of Pelota Vasca, a sport that uses architectural surfaces as part of the game, to explore how athletic activity can reactivate underused urban spaces and foster new forms of collective occupation.<\/p>\n

\u2018The devices can be placed everywhere, reclaiming public space through sport and bringing people together. It\u2019s part of a wider reflection on the fact that public space and activities like this are disappearing everywhere. For us, it\u2019s a way to re-inject activities into public space,\u2019 Ippolito\u00a0Pestellini Laparelli tells us.<\/p>\n

The intervention proposes a flexible system of sporting infrastructures designed to support movement, gathering, and social interaction. Installed within a parking lot surrounded by local sports facilities, the project temporarily shifts the function of the site away from circulation and storage toward participation and public life.<\/p>\n

Even before Conc\u00e9ntrico\u2019s official opening, the installation had already begun fulfilling its intended purpose. Within hours of its completion, local residents gathered around the movable frontones to play basketball, turning the parking lot into an impromptu space for collective recreation.<\/p>\n

At the center of the installation by 2050+ are four mobile frontones, each dedicated to a different activity: Pelota Vasca, basketball, football, and climbing. Distributed across the site, the structures can be repositioned and reconfigured according to different uses and events, allowing the spatial organization of the parking lot to evolve over time.<\/p>\n

The project expands the fronton beyond its original sporting context, turning it into a multifunctional device to reclaim public space. Frontones Danzantes considers sport as a mechanism for producing temporary commons within the city, encouraging locals and visitors to move, gather, and compete within a shared environment. The project continues the ongoing research of the Milan-based multidisciplinary practice<\/a> into the spatial dimension of sport and its ability to transform urban environments. Curator and researcher Erica Petrillo explains that the studio is interested in \u2018sport and in the act of play as a tool to reclaim public space, as a tool to transform urban settings, cities.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Inspired by Pelota Vasca, we decided to create walls where they didn\u2019t exist, occupying a space that used to be a parking lot. It\u2019s a way to carve out spaces where they didn\u2019t exist before,\u2019 Erica Petrillo shares.\u2018The specificity of Pelota Vasca is that it is a game in which you hit a ball against already existing facades, so it\u2019s a way of repurposing urban space and transforming it into a playground.\u2019<\/p>\n

The geometry of the structures references surrounding and historical architectures, connecting the intervention to the urban fabric of Logro\u00f1o, reinterpreting familiar forms as sporting equipment. 2050+ seeks to bridge physical and social gaps embedded within the site, using play as a tool to reconnect fragmented urban conditions.<\/p>\n
