\u201cThe truth is that I don\u2019t know,\u201d Alvarez first said about his future, when interviewed following Argentina\u2019s World Cup victory Austria.<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t think it\u2019s the time to talk, but I can\u2019t hide either. I try to be an honest person. I spoke to the people at the club, who I had to talk to. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfill my dream,” Alvarez added.<\/p>\n

Alvarez is Barcelona\u2019s top target<\/p>\n

Alvarez spoke after coming off the bench in Argentina\u2019s 2-0 World Cup 2026 group stage win over Austria.<\/p>\n

FC Barcelona icon Lionel Messi<\/a> scored two more goals for the defending champions, increasing his tournament tally to five. Alvarez is known to be a fan of the Blaugrana, who wants to emulate his idol at the Spotify Camp Nou.<\/p>\n

Alvarez reportedly agreed to join Barcelona on a five-year deal<\/a> according to reports in Argentina a few weeks ago. Yet it is believed that Joan Laporta and Co. will have to up a $100 million deal for him.<\/p>\n

They haven\u2019t been helped by bitter rival Real Madrid, in their endeavor to land Alvarez. <\/p>\n

After being re-elected, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez kept his campaign trail promise to members by launching a club record $175 million bid<\/a> rejected by Atletico Madrid. <\/p>\n

Yet Barcelona will be impressed by Alvarez publicly coming out and communicating that he wants to leave. That\u2019s a big step in forcing a move to Catalonia, and could force Atleti\u2019s hand into accepting a bid.<\/p>\n

According to MARCA\u2019s transfer market expert Matteo Morreto, a package around the $140 million mark could tempt Atleti into selling a player that clearly doesn\u2019t want to be in Diego Simeone\u2019s squad anymore.<\/p>\n
