Lewis Hamilton<\/a>\u2019s first victory in\u00a0Ferrari<\/a> red understandably triggered plenty of emotion on Sunday night. The seven-time world champion was visibly moved, with people in the media centre remarking that the release of emotion in the paddock almost resembled that of a maiden Formula 1 victory.<\/p>\n

While that is obviously not the case for someone with Hamilton\u2019s list of achievements, the emotion is easy to understand. His move to Maranello was accompanied by enormous hype at the start of last year \u2013 just think of all the fans trying to catch a glimpse of his first laps at Fiorano \u2013 but that also means carrying a lot of pressure on your shoulders when the results did not immediately follow.<\/p>\n

Aside from that emotion, another question quickly emerged in the post-race media sessions with team principals, both in Fred Vasseur\u2019s session and in those of rival teams: what does Hamilton\u2019s victory mean for the remainder of this season? And can he genuinely insert himself into the title battle?<\/p>\n

Although it is still early days and one swallow does not make a summer (no matter how hot it is), it is not an unreasonable question for two reasons. First, Hamilton trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli<\/a> by only 41 points, partly due to the reliability issues Mercedes<\/a> has encountered \u2013 problems Antonelli says the team hopes to fix for Austria<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Secondly, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a very all-round venue, which is why together with Bahrain it has been F1\u2019s most frequently used testing track in recent history. Winning there would normally tell us a great deal about the versatility of a package, but Vasseur was unwilling to go that far this time.<\/p>\n

Questions about a potential title fight were dismissed in his characteristic manner, with a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m not sure that I want to reply to this kind of question. I had probably the same comments two weeks ago, that everything was a disaster and now we are speaking about the world championship. This is the worst approach that I could have,\u201d\u00a0Vasseur said.\u00a0\u201cThe approach is to go to Austria exactly with the same approach that I had in Barcelona and not to think about the championship or to project yourself with 25 more wins, I will never do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team boss added that, in his view, winning in Barcelona says less than it would have in previous years:\u00a0\u201cUsually, perhaps the last 25 years, we are used to say that a good car in Barcelona will dominate the season. But I think this season will be much more based on the fact and the capacity of all the teams to bring performance to the car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is Vasseur right? More circuit-specific factors in 2026<\/p>\n

There are two ways of looking at Vasseur\u2019s statement. On the one hand, there is certainly an element of truth to it. On the other hand, it would be far too simplistic to fully downplay Ferrari\u2019s strength in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

Vasseur is right that 2026 is more of a development race than recent years, naturally on the chassis side, but also regarding the power units thanks to\u00a0ADUO. The competitive order can change from one race weekend to the next, something George Russell<\/a> explained rather well after the Barcelona race.<\/p>\n

The Briton pointed to McLaren<\/a> securing a double podium with its major Miami upgrade package, Mercedes hitting back in Canada, and Ferrari taking a step forward in Barcelona. Under the budget cap, whichever team manages to introduce the most effective upgrades and do so the fastest will reap the rewards.<\/p>\n

In that respect, Ferrari\u2019s aggressive development strategy has been very encouraging so far, both on the chassis and power unit fronts, but Vasseur knows the competition is not standing still either.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it’s a good step forward. But I think what is important is that this season, the championship will be based on the capacity of the team to develop, not on the picture of Barcelona,\u201d the Ferrari boss said.\u00a0\u201cI think we brought something this weekend [Barcelona], the others didn’t. They will probably bring something in the UK, I don’t know. It will be about our capacity and the capacity of the other teams to develop.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is undeniably a bigger factor than in recent F1 seasons, and there is another aspect that should not be forgotten: in 2026, more parameters than in years before have become circuit-specific.<\/p>\n

While differences have always existed between, for example, high-downforce and low-downforce tracks, this year the same applies to the power units. Some circuits are more \u201cenergy poor\u201d, as McLaren team principal Andrea Stella described them, meaning the efficiency of the electrical components plays a greater role there than it does at venues such as Monaco.<\/p>\n

It means the picture can vary from one track to another, not only because of the direction in which the chassis and aerodynamic package have been developed, but also \u2013 more than before \u2013 because of the power unit characteristics.<\/p>\n

In that sense, Vasseur is right that winning in Barcelona is not a guarantee of anything and that people in Maranello should not get overly excited just yet. At the same time, one aspect still stands firm: being competitive in Barcelona continues to show that a package is all-round and that its baseline is strong.<\/p>\n

And that is undoubtedly Ferrari\u2019s biggest gain from the Barcelona weekend. Before the Monaco Grand Prix, many rivals argued that Ferrari would be the favourite in the Principality because of its strength in slow corners and its ride characteristics. But Barcelona showed that the SF-26 is far from a one-trick pony and is instead an all-round package that is also relatively competitive in high-speed corners.<\/p>\n

Yes, circuit-specific factors definitely played a role, and yes, so did the heat, as Ferrari is one of the teams that has done a great job in that area with its new wheel rim design.\u00a0Vasseur is right that Barcelona perhaps says slightly less than it did in previous seasons, but it was still a statement \u2013 one that said Ferrari is a serious contender that cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n
