AEMET said the episode reflects a worsening trend: between 1975\u20111984, Spain averaged just three heatwave days per year; over the past decade, that figure has risen to 22 days. Tropical nights\u2014when temperatures stay above 20\u00b0C\u2014have surged from 19 to 80 nights annually in Barcelona, and from 16 to 52 in Madrid.
