However, Briarwood came in with even more momentum as winners of its last eight including all four area matches. The win streak dated back to March 3 and included a 1-0 win for the Lions in their previous meeting with the Jags on March 10.<\/p>\n
That razor-fine margin proved to be prescient of their second meeting at Spain Park a month later.<\/p>\n
The Jags offense got a big boost from Morgan Anthony, who scored the team\u2019s lone goal in regulation. Briarwood also got a goal on its end though, and the teams remained tied through the end of regulation and both overtime periods.<\/p>\n
A 1-1 tie at the conclusion of 90 minutes of play sent the two teams to the spot to decide the match on penalty kicks. It was also the Lions\u2019 first shootout since the 2025 state championship.<\/p>\n
The two teams went back and forth through the shootout with little separating them. In the end, they were tied through five rounds, leading to sudden death.<\/p>\n
Spain Park converted its attempt, and Briarwood missed, which sealed the sixth-round win for the Jags.<\/p>\n
The Jags improved to 5-8-3 with the win and 2-2 in area play while the Lions dropped to 8-3-1 and 4-1 in the area.<\/p>\n
Briarwood will finish area play against the Pelham Panthers on Tuesday, April 14 at 5 p.m. at Ned Bearden Stadium in Pelham.
