Spanish utility Iberdrola<\/a> and UK-based energy company bp<\/a> have completed the construction phase of a 25 MW green hydrogen plant at bp\u2019s Castell\u00f3n refinery in Spain, developed through their joint venture Castell\u00f3n Green Hydrogen. The partners have now begun commissioning tests at the facility.<\/p>\n

The companies expect the plant to start producing green hydrogen before the end of this year and to become the largest operational green hydrogen facility in Spain by 2026.<\/p>\n

The installation comprises five 5 MW containerized proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser modules supplied by US-based Plug Power, with which Acciona formed a joint venture in 2021. <\/p>\n

The hydrogen produced via water electrolysis using renewable electricity will comply with EU requirements for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) and support bp\u2019s plans to transform the Castell\u00f3n site into an integrated energy hub.<\/p>\n

The project is expected to produce around 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, displacing part of the grey hydrogen currently used at the refinery, which is produced from natural gas.The scheme involves the Energy Technology Institute (ITE) of Valencia and represents an investment of more than \u20ac70 million.
