Spanish utility\u00a0Iberdrola\u00a0and UK-based energy company\u00a0bp\u00a0have completed construction of a 25 MW green hydrogen plant at bp\u2019s Castell\u00f3n refinery in Spain and have begun commissioning the facility ahead of commercial operations.<\/p>\n
The project has been developed through their joint venture, Castell\u00f3n Green Hydrogen. The companies expect the plant to begin producing green hydrogen before the end of this year and become Spain\u2019s largest operational green hydrogen facility by 2026, pv magazine reported.<\/p>\n
The plant is equipped with five 5 MW containerised proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser modules supplied by\u00a0Plug Power, which formed a joint venture with\u00a0Acciona\u00a0in 2021.<\/p>\n
The facility will produce green hydrogen through water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. The hydrogen will meet the European Union\u2019s Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) requirements and support bp\u2019s plan to transform its Castell\u00f3n refinery into an integrated energy hub.<\/p>\n
The project is expected to produce around 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, replacing part of the grey hydrogen currently used at the refinery, which is produced from natural gas.<\/p>\n
The initiative involves Valencia\u2019s Energy Technology Institute (ITE) and represents an investment of more than \u20ac70 million.<\/p>\n
The project has also secured \u20ac15 million in funding under Spain\u2019s Innovative Value Chain and Renewable Hydrogen Knowledge programmes, which are part of the country\u2019s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan supported by the European Union\u2019s NextGenerationEU initiative.<\/p>\n
