Forecasters issued a heatwave notice which came into effect on Sunday, July 5 and remains in place until \u201cat least Wednesday July 8\u201d. It states that high pressure \u201ccombined with high levels of sunshine, strong stability, and light winds, will favor the generations and spread of very dry and warm air mass across much of the country, resulting in a heat wave with very high and persistent temperatures.\u201d<\/p>\n

It warns of the health risks of the heatwave for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, along with the increased risk of wildfires and thunderstorms. It added that the heatwave could end on Wednesday or last until Thursday, as there \u201cis a high degree of uncertainty regarding the extent and duration of the phenomenon, due to the changing position of the cut-off low.\u201d<\/p>\n
Aemet\u2019s fire risk maps indicate that the majority of the country is under an \u2018extreme risk\u2019 of wildfires, particularly the north, the west coast and the eastern regions.<\/p>\n
The UK Foreign Office warns that wildfires can happen often in Spain, particularly during the summer months. It states that UK travellers should \u201cbe aware of their environment when visiting and driving through woodland areas\u201d. It adds: \u201cCausing a wildfire is a criminal offence in Spain, even if unintentional. Make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished, do not light barbecues and do not leave empty bottles behind.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can be heavily fined for not following the rules against lighting outdoor barbecues in forest areas. Make sure you know the rules if considering a barbeque.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warnings are also in force for the Canary Islands where temperatures in Gran Canaria could reach up to 40C. Highs of 37C are forecast for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.<\/p>\n
The Canary Islands government has declared a state of pre-alert for maximum temperatures throughout the archipelago. It warns: \u201cA multi-day heatwave is expected to begin on Sunday in the eastern islands and gradually spread to the rest of the archipelago over the next week, particularly from Tuesday onwards. The analyzed weather models show a consistent trend towards a heatwave associated with a mass of warm air originating in Africa, initially affecting Gran Canaria and extending to inland areas of Fuerteventura on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe heatwave is expected to intensify from Monday, gradually spreading to the rest of the archipelago, with the most significant impact between Tuesday and Thursday. Maximum temperatures of 34C or higher are expected in inland and mid-altitude areas facing south on Gran Canaria, reaching values close to 38C in some spots at the beginning of next week.<\/p>\n
\u201cModels also predict temperatures up to 33C in Fuerteventura and between 32C and 33C in inland areas of Tenerife, with the possibility of this heatwave spreading to the rest of the archipelago depending on how weather conditions develop.\u201d<\/p>\n
