As he stated, the objective is to reinforce the preventive response capacity in a high-risk scenario that affects practically the entire country.

In his appearance before the media, Montenegro stressed the importance of anticipation: “We are not facing a shortfall within our fire brigades, but rather a necessary prudence. The weather forecasts for the next 48 hours are critical and neighbourly cooperation is a fundamental shield to prevent greater tragedies.”

Lisbon has activated the European Mechanism for Civil Protection and has resorted to bilateral cooperation agreements with Spain and Morocco to guarantee a swift response should the fires escalate.

Firefighters battle the flames during the Vouzela wildfire in Tondela, Portugal, on 4 July 2026 – REUTERS/ PEDRO ROCHA

Red alert due to extreme temperatures and strong winds

The decision coincides with the declaration of a red alert in several Portuguese regions, where temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius, accompanied by low humidity and strong winds, conditions that favour the rapid spread of fire.

As part of the support deployment, Portugal will receive a specialised Spanish military unit in the coming hours, comprising around thirty vehicles, which will provide surveillance, reconnaissance, rescue and logistical support duties, although it will not participate directly in firefighting tasks.

The Spanish Ministry of the Interior issued an official statement reaffirming the Iberian commitment: “The security of the Peninsula is shared.
