\n At least 12 people have been killed in a wildfire in southern Spain as \u200c150 firefighters are working to put out the blaze, emergency services in the Andalusia region have said.\n <\/p>\n

Minister of the Presidency, Health, and Emergencies \u200bAntonio Sanz described the fire as “the most \u200cdevastating fire to date in our region” and described the situation \u200bas an “unprecedented tragedy”.<\/p>\n

Juanma Moreno, the leader of Spain’s southern Andalusia region, wrote in a post on \u200cX: “Our deepest condolences to the families \u200bof the six people who lost \u2060their lives in the \u2060Los Gallardos and the affection from all of us to the municipalities \u200caffected by the fire.”<\/p>\n

The blaze broke out in Los Gallardos, a municipality of the Almeria province in Andalusia.<\/p>\n

It comes after a wildfire \u2060in southern France earlier this week forced the \u200bevacuation of more than 10,000 people from two \u200bdozen small towns and villages near \u200bthe Spanish border.<\/p>\n

Early summer heatwaves across western Europe \u2060in May and June have parched vast areas of land, making them particularly vulnerable to wildfires this \u2060year.<\/p>\n

Europe is warming at more \u200bthan twice the global average, the World Meteorological \u200bOrganisation has said, making prolonged heat episodes increasingly likely.<\/p>\n
