{"id":53977,"date":"2026-07-12T04:49:42","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T04:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/53977\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T04:49:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T04:49:42","slug":"barcelona-changed-joan-gamper-trophy-plans-after-alvaro-arbeloas-appointment-at-fulham-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/53977\/","title":{"rendered":"Barcelona changed Joan Gamper Trophy plans after Alvaro Arbeloa&#8217;s appointment at Fulham \u2013 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barcelona\u2019s search for an opponent for this year\u2019s Joan Gamper Trophy took an unexpected turn after the club decided against inviting Fulham following the appointment of former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mundodeportivo.com\/futbol\/fc-barcelona\/20260711\/1004205224\/barca-descarto-fulham-gamper-fichaje-arbeloa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mundo Deportivo<\/a>, the Catalan club had been exploring several options for the traditional pre-season fixture, with Fulham viewed as one of the leading candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A meeting with an English club was considered an attractive option given the competitive level of the Premier League and the opportunity to present Hansi Flick\u2019s squad against high-quality opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Fulham\u2019s managerial change prompted Barcelona to reassess their plans, ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/barcauniversal.com\/barcelona-settle-on-al-ahly-as-opponents-for-the-joan-gamper-trophy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">paving the way for Egyptian giants Al Ahly <\/a>to be selected as this year\u2019s Gamper Trophy opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Fulham dropped from Barcelona\u2019s shortlist\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barcelona intended to organise a fixture that would generate excitement while providing meaningful preparation before the competitive season begins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/albacete-balompie-v-real-madrid-copa-del-rey-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Alvaro Arbeloa, Real Madrid manager\" class=\"wp-image-189795\"  \/>Barcelona cancelled Fulham plans due to Arbeloa. (Photo by Denis Doyle\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fulham fitted many of the club\u2019s requirements, offering strong opposition and the appeal that comes with facing a Premier League side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation changed, though, once Fulham confirmed Arbeloa as their new manager.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former Real Madrid defender has never been a popular figure among Barcelona supporters, dating back to his years as a player.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recently, his spell in Madrid\u2019s coaching structure and several public comments further strengthened that perception, making the prospect of him leading the opposition far less appealing for Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>Ajax and Cruz Azul were also considered<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/fc-barcelona-v-como1907-joan-gamper-trophy-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Players of FC Barcelona celebrate with the Joan Gamper Trophy\" class=\"wp-image-198438\"  \/>Barcelona will play  Al Ahly in the Joan Gamper Trophy.
