This process, sometimes immediate and at other times symbolic, reflected a strategy of domination through the consecration of Muslim places of worship as centres of Christian worship.

In Seville, the transformation of mosques into churches was particularly significant. The adaptation of these spaces involved the addition of altars, chapels and bell towers, altering the original identity of the Islamic buildings. However, the Islamic influence did not disappear completely: many Christian churches retain horseshoe arches, calligraphic plasterwork or minarets converted into bell towers, evidence of the coexistence and cultural reinterpretation that characterised the city’s architecture.

Mudejar art emerged as an expression of this cultural interaction. It is not merely decoration, but a functional Christian reinterpretation carried out using Islamic techniques, materials and styles. These elements transform the churches into living testimonies of a shared history, where architecture is used as both a tool of power and a repository of cultural memory.

The lecture “From Mosques to Churches.
