Argentina battled its way to another final despite injuries and the demands of an expanded tournament.

The match also may have marked Lionel Messi’s final World Cup appearance. Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo are nearing the end of remarkable international careers, opening the spotlight for a new generation led by Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Spain’s Lamine Yamal. Emerging players such as 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and 17-year-old Gilberto Mora of Mexico also offered a glimpse of the talent waiting behind them.

The tournament’s expansion produced mixed reviews.

Allowing 48 countries to participate created historic opportunities for national teams that previously struggled to qualify. It also exposed wide gaps in quality during portions of the group stage.

As the tournament progressed, however, the competition regained its intensity, delivered memorable matches and showed that the larger format can sustain global interest.

Spain’s victory reinforced the value of investing in youth development and continually refreshing a national team. Other traditional powers may now need to accelerate their own generational transitions to remain competitive.

The 2026 World Cup also confirmed that soccer’s enormous popularity has made the tournament both a global celebration and a multibillion-dollar business. Hosting matches across three countries mobilized cities, attracted investment and brought together supporters from countless cultures.

For Miami, hosting World Cup matches for the first time further strengthened soccer’s presence in a city where the sport was already deeply woven into the community.

Spain now sits atop the soccer world and a new generation is ready to take center stage. The legacies of the game’s departing stars will remain, but the ball is already being passed to the players who will write its next chapter.

The first World Cup hosted by three countries ended with Spain on top, ushering a new era for…

[2
6595,5005,6522,19307,9294,17,4615,23774,369,3003,23317,24133
post-59328","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-spain","tag-2026-fifa-world-cup","tag-2026-world-cup","tag-fifa-world-cup-2026","tag-key-biscayne","tag-miami","tag-spain","tag-triumph","tag-victory","tag-world-cup","tag-world-cup-2026","tag-world-cup-final","tag-world-cup-final-match
["GET
