We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Over 300,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wildfires\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildfires<\/a> continue to rage across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/spain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/france\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>At least one man has been killed in Spain and dozens others have been injured including at least 68 firefighters in France. <\/p>\n<p>Government officials from both countries have commented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/wildfires-france-spain-heatwave-b3021382.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the historic nature of the blaze<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/madrid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Madrid<\/a>\u2019s regional president Isabel D\u00edaz Ayuso describing it as \u201cthe worst fire in the history of the region\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fires \u200cwhich are hitting our country have reached a level that has never \u200bbeen seen before,\u201d French \u200cprime minister Sebastien Lecornu wrote on X on Saturday. <\/p>\n<p>Lecornu promised that over 1.5 million face masks would be provided as even areas unaffected by the worst of the blaze saw air quality deteriorate and smoke spread. <\/p>\n<p>Below we look at the areas affected and evacuated as a result of the wildfires.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/france-spain-wildfires-europe-bordeaux-map-latest-updates-b3021378.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Follow the latest updates here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>France <\/p>\n<p>The entirety of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/france-wildfire-spain-europe-heatwave-b3021123.html\" title=\"Raining ash and a tower of black smoke: Families flee \u2018apocalyptic\u2019 wildfires on the road out of L\u00e8ge-Cap Ferret\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cap-Ferret peninsula has been cleared as the wildfires<\/a> spread throughout the Gironde region, burning in Le Porge and Saumos. <\/p>\n<p>The fires appeared to be advancing towards the French city of Bordeaux after the flames continued to spread, with several suburban regions on the city\u2019s outskirts evacuated on Saturday morning. <\/p>\n<p>This included the evacuation of large parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/bordeaux\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bordeaux<\/a>\u2019s suburbs, including the areas of Le Haillan, Eysines \u200band Merignac. <\/p>\n<p>French officials told Sky News on Sunday that they are considering a total evacuation of the city of Bordeaux &#8211; the sixth largest city in the country &#8211; if needed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2286804086-afp.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Beach goers sit on the beach of Moutchic in Lacanau, southwestern France on July 24, 2026, as clouds of smoke rise into the sky from a wildfire.\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Beach goers sit on the beach of Moutchic in Lacanau, southwestern France on July 24, 2026, as clouds of smoke rise into the sky from a wildfire. (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Local prefect Sophie Broca described the fast-spreading blaze throughout Gironde as an \u201cXXL fire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Another major fire began further along the coast near the town of Biscarrosse in the Landes region on Thursday afternoon with several of the surrounding areas also evacuated for safety. <\/p>\n<p>The French army has also been drafted in to help with the crisis as the inferno showed no signs of slowing down. <\/p>\n<p>Over 220,000 people have been evacuated across France as it is experiencing worsening drought conditions following a heatwave and water shortages. <\/p>\n<p>Spain<\/p>\n<p>The government of Spain has declared a national emergency as the worst of the fires burned close to the country\u2019s capital of Madrid, which is home to 6.8 million people. <\/p>\n<p>Regional president Ayuso said that that conditions had been made worse by a combination of high temperatures, wind and the merging of blazes. <\/p>\n<p>The Spanish interior ministry reported that a total of 70,000 people had been evacuated from villages outside Madrid. <\/p>\n<p>One man died in Manises, near the Spanish city of Valencia, the \u200bcountry&#8217;s \u2060interior \u2060ministry has said, after he was found in a car \u2060in \u200ba ravine hundreds of kilometres away from the severe wildfires spreading near Madrid. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785125414_975_2286913752...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Elderly persons evacuated amid wildfires rest in a sports hall in Villaviciosa de Odon, 20 kms west of Madrid, on July 25, 2026.\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Elderly persons evacuated amid wildfires rest in a sports hall in Villaviciosa de Odon, 20 kms west of Madrid, on July 25, 2026. (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>While Spain\u2019s meteorological agency Aemet said that the fire risk remains at \u201cvery high\u201d levels across vast areas of the country and \u201cextreme\u201d in the north-east and east, the threat was \u201clower that in previous days\u201d in central and western Spain, according to an update on X on Saturday. <\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s health minister Monica Garcia warned people to be mindful of the air quality across Madrid as she advised residents to stay in doors and pay special attention to vulnerable people. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the fires, today&#8217;s air quality in Madrid is not good, with PM2.5 levels well above those recommended by the WHO,\u201d she wrote in a post on X on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2026-07-25T121142Z_187867682_RC20LMAR679F_RTRMADP_3_EUROPE-WEATHER-FRANCE-WILDFIRE.JPG\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A view of a wildfire near Lacanau, amongst worsening drought conditions following a heatwave and water shortages across much of France, July 25, 2026.\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>A view of a wildfire near Lacanau, amongst worsening drought conditions following a heatwave and water shortages across much of France, July 25, 2026. Seek medical attention if you notice difficulty breathing, chest pain, or shortness of breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPay special attention to vulnerable people around you.
