{"id":61394,"date":"2026-07-27T09:31:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T09:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/61394\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T09:31:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T09:31:11","slug":"massive-wildfires-force-evacuations-across-france-spain-and-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/61394\/","title":{"rendered":"Massive wildfires force evacuations across France, Spain and Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes as wildfires continue to rage across southern Europe, with France deploying thousands of emergency personnel to battle blazes in the southwest.<\/p>\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron called an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday morning to address the crisis, as authorities confirmed that 115 000 hectares have burned across France since the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>France battles unprecedented fire season<\/p>\n<p>Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the country is currently fighting 30 to 40 wildfires daily, with conditions remaining \u201cvery unfavourable\u201d across major fronts including the southwestern regions of Gironde and Landes, and the Mediterranean Var region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this stage, the situation remained stable overall overnight, without any major developments,\u201d the Gironde prefecture said in a media briefing on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The department has deployed 2 500 firefighters, including a Swiss team, alongside 1 500 military personnel and around 1 200 police officers to tackle the Gironde blaze.<\/p>\n<p>Local authorities banned holiday camps in the region on Monday, including Scout trips with overnight stays and camps for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The 220 000 people evacuated from the Gironde region will not be able to return home \u201cuntil the fire has been brought under control\u201d, local prefect Sophie Brocas said on Sunday. PHOTO: AFP<\/p>\n<p>Rare fire cloud appears over France<\/p>\n<p>The massive wildfire in southwest France has created a dangerous \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rmets.org\/metmatters\/pyrocumulonimbus-clouds\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rmets.org\/metmatters\/pyrocumulonimbus-clouds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">pyrocumulonimbus<\/a>\u201d cloud, a phenomenon never before seen in the country, according to the spokesman for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.developmentaid.org\/organizations\/view\/414990\/federation-nationale-des-sapeurs-pompiers-de-france-french-firefighters-federation\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.developmentaid.org\/organizations\/view\/414990\/federation-nationale-des-sapeurs-pompiers-de-france-french-firefighters-federation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Firefighters Federation of France<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These fire clouds occur when a wildfire heats the air near the ground, causing it to rise rapidly. The rising air cools and forms a turbulent mass that can generate its own winds, potentially worsening fires.<\/p>\n<p>Spain records largest blaze in recent history<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s Minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, confirmed that wildfires around Madrid have included the largest forest fire in the country\u2019s recent history.<\/p>\n<p>The blazes have affected 77 000 hectares across the Madrid, Avila and Toledo regions, with the largest area around Avila.<\/p>\n<p>King Felipe VI, visiting a shelter for evacuees, said the fires had caused \u201cincalculable\u201d damage to Spain\u2019s natural heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned that \u201cdifficult hours lie ahead\u201d despite positive indications towards containing the blaze. He was due to visit affected areas in Valencia on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Italy evacuates hundreds by sea<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 people were evacuated by sea from Italy\u2019s southern Adriatic coast on Sunday as wildfires swept through the area.
