The figure was significantly smaller than that provided by the Spanish government, which on Sunday said it had recovered 72 bodies, up from <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-01\/europe-tightens-its-borders-after-ceuta-migrant-surge\/106985526\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106985526\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the 67 it had previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-01\/europe-tightens-its-borders-after-ceuta-migrant-surge\/106985526\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Italy takes &#8216;extraordinary&#8217; action after Ceuta migrant rush<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tens of thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in chaotic scenes that left dozens dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, Morocco&#8217;s death toll may have been limited to those deaths occurring on the Moroccan side of the border, with the ministry adding that it was fact-checking reports of more deaths across the border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The statement otherwise echoed comments from Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who over the weekend blamed people-smuggling networks for exploiting vulnerable migrants by spreading misleading interpretations of a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ruling said migrants intercepted at sea could not be summarily returned in the absence of a physical barrier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Morocco isn&#8217;t any threat to Ceuta or the rest of Spain.
