{"id":65996,"date":"2026-08-05T01:43:41","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T01:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/65996\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T01:43:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T01:43:41","slug":"ceuta-crisis-22-eu-leaders-gang-up-against-spains-sanchez-over-his-migration-policy-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/65996\/","title":{"rendered":"Ceuta crisis: 22 EU leaders gang up against Spain\u2019s S\u00e1nchez over his migration policy \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa and Irish Prime Minister Miche\u00e1l Martin, the 22 leaders made direct reference to the need for EU-level cooperation on policies such as Madrid\u2019s migrant regularization scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a duty to effectively deter and relentlessly combat illegal migration, by coordinating our action, strengthening our external borders and addressing all policies that can serve as pull factors, such as the regularization of [a] very large number of irregular migrants,\u201d the leaders wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Madrid has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/spain-ceuta-migration-crisis-pedro-sanchez-opposition-backlash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushed back<\/a> against the claim that the country\u2019s regularization scheme triggered the crisis in Ceuta, and has pointed out that none of the people who illegally entered the exclave would be eligible to benefit from the measure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis process is based on very specific conditions, such as proof of residency in Spain before January 1, 2026, and having resided in Spain for five consecutive months at the time of application,\u201d said a spokesperson for the Spanish foreign ministry. Moreover, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/spain-greenlights-mass-regularization-of-more-than-500000-undocumented-migrants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deadline<\/a>\u00a0for filing applications for the scheme, which was launched in April, was in June.<\/p>\n<p>But those explanations have not appeared to sway the EU leaders who signed the letter to Costa, Von der Leyen and Martin. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot allow uncontrolled mass crossings, the instrumentalisation of migration or other hybrid threats to create the perception that illegal entry into the European Union is possible.
