PICTURE: Reuters\/Violeta Santos Moura<\/p>\n<p>For the vast majority who won\u2019t be named before then, staff have taken fingerprints and DNA samples and will keep working to connect the bodies with names, and then with relatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have heard nothing more\u201d<br \/>The influx and associated fatalities overwhelmed Ceuta\u2019s five-man forensic team, which dealt with just 76 deaths in the whole of last year. Eight extra staff have been drafted in from the mainland and a bigger morgue has been set up at a former military hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have faced such a number of victims that it has overwhelmed our operational capacities,\u201d said team director Manuel Aparcero, who was called to certify the deaths of migrants as they were brought onto the beach on 30th July.<\/p>\n<p>As his team kept working a week on, families posted messages on social media, watched news reports and kept close to phones, hoping their relatives would finally get in touch.<\/p>\n<p>Jamal Bahloul, 26, said his 22-year-old brother Mohamed, a construction worker, left his home in Tangier and was last in contact on 30th July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have heard nothing more,\u201d said Bahloul. \u201cWe don\u2019t know whether he is in Ceuta or he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">SPAIN\u2019S GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES IMMEDIATE BORDER CONTROLS WITH ITALY IN MIGRATION SPAT<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Spain\u2019s government said on Friday it would establish border controls for flights and ships from Italy from midnight on Saturday until 7th September in a dispute with the neighbouring country over irregular migration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Passport, nationality and visa checks would be conducted for Italian passengers and visitors from other countries arriving from Italy \u201camid the persistent irregular migratory pressure\u201d from the Alpine country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Spain said the measures would apply while Italy applied its own measures which it said were motivated by the mass migration rush by 72,000 people on Spain\u2019s African enclave of Ceuta on 30th July.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2013 AISLINN LAING\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\tWe rely on our readers to fund Sight&#8217;s work &#8211; become a financial supporter today!<\/p>\n<p>Other relatives are gathering at the Moroccan side of the border to press officials for answers and visit local morgues.<\/p>\n<p>Around 72,000 people illegally entered Ceuta from Morocco in a 24-hour period, according to Spanish estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Autopsies revealed many of the 80 people whose bodies were brought ashore in Spain died from cardiopulmonary arrests \u2013 a common feature of drownings, pathologists said.<\/p>\n<p>Just four have been identified through fingerprints already in Spanish databases or through DNA samples, and tests are being run to confirm the identities of another four, according to a statement from a local court issued late on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish police have shared the fingerprints of all those who died with the Moroccan authorities, and have opened an office by the border where relatives can file a missing persons report and supply DNA samples.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-179490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Spain-Ceuta-military-hospital-070826003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\"  \/><br \/>A police vehicle outside the military hospital where bodies of migrants who died amid the recent mass crossings on foot and by sea from Morocco into Spanish territory are held, in Ceuta, Spain, on 7th August, 2026. PICTURE: Reuters\/Violeta Santos Moura<\/p>\n<p>A total of 19 reports had been filed by Thursday, according to the court statement.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to identify the migrants are being conducted under a mass accidents protocol that is usually applied to traffic accidents or natural disasters primarily affecting Spaniards, such as the Adamuz rail disaster in January.<\/p>\n<p>Charities have in the past criticised the government\u2019s failure to apply the same measures to incidents involving migrants, such as the 2024 sinking of a migrant boat near the Canary Islands in which 57 people were believed to have died.<\/p>\n<p>All the migrant bodies will be buried in Ceuta in the coming days unless a relative asks for a body already identified to be repatriated, Aparcero said.
