MADRID\/MILAN, Aug 9 (Reuters) – Spain checked around 200 travellers arriving from Italy at the country’s six largest \u200cairports on the first day of border controls reintroduced \u200cfollowing a dispute with Italy over irregular migration.<\/p>\n
Spain’s Interior Ministry carried out \u200bchecks on a total of 199 people on 12 flights from Italy to airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante and Valencia, it said late on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Spain said on Friday \u200cborder controls for flights \u2060and ships from Italy would remain in force until September 7 after Rome applied its own \u2060measures, which it said were motivated by the mass migration rush by 72,000 people to Spain’s North African enclave of \u200bCeuta on \u200bJuly 30.<\/p>\n
Italy has suspended the \u200bEuropean Union’s border-free Schengen \u200carrangements with Spain since August 1 and said it would maintain border controls until at least August 15.<\/p>\n
Rome said the measure would not affect Spanish or other EU citizens travelling to Italy and would instead involve targeted checks on non-EU \u200cnationals arriving from Spain by \u200bair or sea.<\/p>\n
“We hope to be \u200bable to lift the \u200bsuspension soon, as soon as there is no \u200clonger any risk,” Foreign Minister \u200bAntonio Tajani told \u200bItalian daily Corriere della Sera in an interview published on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The Schengen Area allows passport-free travel across 29 \u200bEuropean countries, although \u200cmember states can temporarily reintroduce border controls on security \u200bor public-order grounds.<\/p>\n
