As of Sunday morning, controls for travellers arriving from Italy<\/a> hadn’t been implemented in the Balearics, but they will be introduced shortly as the order was published in the Official Bulletin in the Balearics on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The Aviba travel agencies association in the Balearics has criticised the spread of misinformation regarding border controls<\/a> between Spain<\/a> and Italy. Its president, Pedro Fiol, says travel agencies throughout Spain are receiving constant calls, asking what documentation is needed and whether it’s true that entry is being denied for not having a passport.<\/p>\n

“Not everyone has a valid passport, as until now the Spanish National Identity Card (DNI) was sufficient for Spaniards as was the electronic identity card for Italians. Advice has been issued to also carry passports. The problem isn’t just which document should be presented, but the insecurity and confusion that arise when passengers don’t know for sure what will be required at the airport.”<\/p>\n

Rumours and contradictory information have been spreading rapidly. Fiol is therefore calling for more information and asking the ministry of foreign affairs to update its travel recommendations for Italy. “In this context, it wouldn’t hurt to reinforce the message that a DNI is sufficient. It’s crucial to strengthen official communication and prevent passengers from arriving at the airport with doubts about the documents they need to present.”<\/p>\n

He explains that no reservations have so far been cancelled and that sales not decreased, but he fears this may happen if the situation continues beyond September 7 (the controls are due to end then). “At this point in the season, practically everything is sold out, and those who have already organised their trips will travel and adapt to the established controls.<\/p>\n

“At Aviba we respect any measure aimed at guaranteeing safety and compliance with border regulations, but we reject this new border control. It’s regrettable to see how the underlying problem remains unresolved, while Spain and Italy play a game of Risk and put those travelling between the two countries in a difficult position.
