There does not appear to be a significant drop in temperatures on the horizon as the heat<\/a> continues to grip Mallorca<\/a> and the Balearics<\/a>. And the average temperature in the Balearics during July was 28.1\u00ba, three degrees higher than usual for that period, with dry conditions prevailing in the region, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).<\/p>\n

July 2026 was, tied with July 2022, the warmest on record in Spain<\/a> since records began (1961), with an average temperature on the mainland of 25.7 degrees; it was also the driest, with just 4.6 litres per square metre \u2013 a quarter of the usual amount.<\/p>\n

Temperatures across the mainland averaged 2.6\u00b0C above normal, making this the warmest month in the entire historical record \u2013 not only when compared with other Julys, but with every month of the year.<\/p>\n

Of the ten warmest Julys on record, eight have occurred in the 21st century, but this one has been \u201ca month characterised by extremely high temperatures and extremely low rainfall\u201d, explained the Aemet.<\/p>\n

It has been an extremely hot month across virtually the entire northern third of the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean region, with temperature anomalies of over 5\u00b0C recorded in parts of northern Navarre and Aragon, and around 4\u00b0C in La Rioja, the Basque Country, inland Catalonia and Galicia.<\/p>\n

The highest temperatures recorded at weather stations were 44.2\u00b0 in Murcia on 23 July and 43.9\u00b0 at Granada Airport on 22 July. It was only between 25 and 27 July that temperatures dropped to normal or slightly cooler levels.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the average temperature in the Balearics during July was 28.1\u00b0, three degrees above the usual for that period, whilst in the Canary Islands it was 23.5\u00b0, more than one degree (1.2\u00b0) above the usual.<\/p>\n

As for rainfall, it was an extremely dry month, with a total of 4.6 litres per square metre across mainland Spain \u2013 just 26 per cent of the usual amount for this period. Precipitation was predominantly dry or very dry across much of the mainland, with areas of extremely dry conditions in the Ebro Valley and, in particular, in Catalonia.<\/p>\n
