After 18 months of uncertainty, tension and transfer market drama, Real Madrid announced on Thursday that Vinicius Junior had finally signed a contract renewal.<\/p>\n

Arsenal had positioned themselves strongly and were ready to move on an ambitious deal for the 26-year-old Brazil forward<\/a> if he chose not to extend with the Spanish club.<\/p>\n

Vinicius Jr was genuinely attracted by the Premier League champions\u2019 proposal \u2014 which was fully backed by the owners, sporting director Andrea Berta and head coach Mikel Arteta.<\/p>\n

Exclusively revealed by The Athletic on July 25, Arsenal\u2019s offer reflected months of behind-the-scenes work and positive progress from several high-level conversations, leaving Madrid in a delicate position.<\/p>\n

Vinicius Jr had rejected two offers from Madrid before the turning point came on Wednesday in crunch talks between club officials and the player\u2019s representatives. Both sides came away from that meeting believing an extension would happen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That same evening, aware of the scrutiny his position was attracting, Vinicius Jr deleted all photos from his Instagram profile. The following day, he shared a post with Real Madrid\u2019s account announcing his renewal until 2032. It makes him one of the highest-paid players in the club\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

\u201cEight years at the Bernabeu are far too short; six more years and forever,\u201d he wrote on social media.<\/p>\n

But it hasn\u2019t been a fairy tale.<\/p>\n

Vinicius Jr arrived at Madrid from Flamengo in July 2018 shortly after turning 18. When he extended his deal at the Bernabeu in 2022, negotiations went smoothly. With that contract expiring in June 2027, this time it has been very difficult.<\/p>\n

Here, informed by conversations with multiple sources close to the situation (who asked to speak anonymously to protect relationships), is the story of how Madrid and Vinicius Jr reached agreement \u2014 and how close Arsenal came to pulling off a stunning signing.<\/p>\n

Madrid\u2019s leadership and Vinicius Jr\u2019s representatives first began negotiating an extension at a meeting at the club\u2019s training ground in January 2025.<\/p>\n

Having achieved several bonuses \u2014 including for winning FIFA\u2019s award for the best player in the world 18 months ago, shortly after missing out on the Ballon d\u2019Or<\/a> \u2014 Vinicius Jr was earning about \u20ac18million (\u00a315.4m; $20.7m at current rates) net per season. Madrid\u2019s offer was to improve this to around \u20ac20m.<\/p>\n

Accompanied by two of his agents and his father, Vinicius Jr turned down the offer put forward by general manager Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat \u2014 perhaps the most influential figure in his \u20ac45million signing eight years ago.<\/p>\n

Weeks later, Madrid rejected a counterproposal put forward by the player\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

Despite this, many media outlets in Spain reported that Vinicius Jr\u2019s renewal was practically sealed that April. When contacted by The Athletic, sources at Madrid indicated this was true, while those close to the player categorically denied it.<\/p>\n

The Athletic revealed that the Brazilian was asking for an annual package worth slightly under \u20ac30million<\/a>. That comprised a base salary, performance-related fees and a renewal bonus. No player in Madrid\u2019s history had been rewarded with such a bonus \u2014 and this would prove to be the main sticking point in negotiations.<\/p>\n

The arrival of Xabi Alonso as Madrid\u2019s new manager (he replaced Carlo Ancelotti in May 2025) became another key factor. Alonso never connected with Vinicius Jr, and even before the start of the 2025-26 season, those closest to the Brazilian were predicting that it would not be an easy campaign.<\/p>\n

Early tensions came to a head that October, when Vinicius Jr reacted angrily to being substituted in the first Clasico of the season<\/a>, with Madrid 2-1 up at home to Barcelona and about 20 minutes to play.<\/p>\n

The key development came after the game. In a meeting with Madrid president Florentino Perez, Vinicius Jr apologised for his behaviour. When Perez raised the issue of his renewal, Vinicius Jr told him that he did not see extending as being in his best interests, so long as Alonso was in charge<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After a decline in results and a further breakdown in his relationship with Vinicius Jr and other members of the Madrid squad, Alonso was sacked in January.<\/p>\n

A year on from when renewal talks with Vinicius Jr first took place, the prospect of progress was beginning to look slightly more promising. When Alvaro Arbeloa was promoted to the first team as Alonso\u2019s replacement, it did not solve Real Madrid\u2019s problems, but it was a breath of fresh air for Vinicius Jr. Arbeloa praised him, defended him and instilled confidence in him from the outset.<\/p>\n

However, Madrid and Vinicius Jr still had to bridge the huge financial gap in negotiations, and several months passed without concrete talks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is when Arsenal began to make their moves. They operated carefully and effectively, with total commitment from the ownership to Berta and Arteta.<\/p>\n

All the key figures at the London club spoke at length with Vinicius Jr and his representatives to explain their project in depth and how the Brazilian would sit at its centre<\/a>. The main focus was on football, but the impact and benefits that a commercial partnership would bring to both sides were also highlighted.<\/p>\n

Even without a formal agreement in place, personal terms between Arsenal and Vinicius Jr would not have been an issue. The figures discussed during the meetings persuaded him that they were serious, and Arsenal\u2019s owners were willing to make a huge effort, breaking their salary structure, to secure his signing. They believed their offer would make it difficult for Real Madrid to compete financially.<\/p>\n

It was a hugely ambitious approach, and while the hierarchy were fully committed to the pursuit, some within Arsenal were dubious about the feasibility of such a deal. Others expressed concern about how a transfer of this magnitude might affect future signings or contract renewals.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a frosty atmosphere prevailed between Madrid and Vinicius Jr. Casual conversations between the player and club officials began to happen less and less often. This growing disconnect was reflected in the Spanish press, with reports suggesting that the club might withdraw their renewal offer \u2014 as happened when then-captain Sergio Ramos left in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The stance coming out of the Vinicius Jr camp was that there would be no meetings unless the club changed its offer.<\/p>\n

The arrival this summer of Jose Mourinho<\/a> as Madrid\u2019s third new manager in just over a year would turn out to be a point in favour of Vinicius Jr staying \u2014 despite the 63-year-old\u2019s comments about him earlier this season.<\/p>\n

On February 17, Real Madrid\u2019s Champions League match at Benfica was stopped after Vinicius Jr alleged Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni racially abused him. Prestianni denied the allegation and was subsequently banned by UEFA and FIFA<\/a> after admitting using a homophobic (rather than racist) slur against the Madrid forward.<\/p>\n

On the night, Mourinho suggested Vinicius Jr had incited the incident. In comments made to Amazon Prime, he appeared to blame him for provoking the regular racist abuse he has suffered in recent years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What Mourinho said did not go down well with Vinicius Jr, sources close to the player said at the time. Those same sources later said he had no problem with Mourinho being appointed at Madrid.<\/p>\n

Last Tuesday, Real Madrid TV released an interview with Vinicius Jr after his first training session back with the team following the World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201c(I\u2019m) very well, getting to know the new manager, the new players, and working really hard in training,\u201d he said. \u201c(Mourinho) wants me to be just as I\u2019ve always been: happy, positive, and playing my own style of football.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the World Cup, Madrid made a new offer to Vinicius Jr. It was worth in the region of \u20ac22million a year, and was rejected by the player. After Brazil were knocked out in the round of 16 by Norway on July 5, a meeting was then scheduled for August 5, when he would be back with the club after holidays.<\/p>\n

After starting work at Madrid in June, Mourinho had been in regular contact with Vinicius Jr. He was keen for the player to stay and wanted him in the squad, but would have accepted any decision made by the club. Some key figures were in favour of selling Vinicius Jr if no agreement could be reached, fearing he might end up leaving for nothing.<\/p>\n

Aware of the whole picture, Arsenal were optimistic.<\/p>\n

On their side, everything was in place to go ahead if no agreement was reached between Madrid and Vinicius Jr. Right up until that August 5 meeting, Arsenal were confident the player\u2019s decision could go their way.<\/p>\n

When news emerged that Madrid had made another improved offer to Vinicius Jr in those talks,<\/a> it sent ripples through the Arsenal hierarchy. It was received as bad news \u2014 even if there had been no final decision, key figures suspected it meant he would extend.<\/p>\n

They were proved right. Vinicius Jr\u2019s decision to stay at the Bernabeu was communicated to Arsenal last Wednesday by both the player and his representatives, who expressed their gratitude for the treatment they had received.<\/p>\n

They explained they were only turning Arsenal down because of Vinicius Jr\u2019s affection for Real Madrid \u2014 and the Spanish club\u2019s significant financial effort to retain him. Hours earlier, Madrid had made a surprising and decisive move.<\/p>\n

The crucial meeting between Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr took place at a restaurant in the Spanish capital, not at the training ground. It was attended by Frederico Pena and Tata Soares, Vinicius Jr\u2019s two most trusted agents, as well as Sanchez and Calafat.<\/p>\n

Madrid president Perez was not directly involved, but he was kept informed of developments, and Sanchez and Calafat negotiated on the basis of what had been discussed with the 79-year-old.<\/p>\n

Although both sides agreed to keep the exact figures private, aware of how it could affect future renewals, Madrid did go higher than the \u20ac22million figure that was turned down. Sources close to the negotiations said the final sum reflected the Brazilian\u2019s importance to the 15-time European champions.<\/p>\n

At Arsenal, there was disappointment, but also acceptance. Despite their confidence in the proposal they made to Vinicius Jr, they knew him staying at Madrid was always a possibility. An ambitious pursuit like theirs came with risks. Arsenal see it as a sign of progress that they were a serious contender for his signature.<\/p>\n
