Real Madrid\u2019s decision to sign Denzel Dumfries has created an intriguing selection headache for new manager Jose Mourinho ahead of the 2026\/27 La Liga season.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands international has arrived from Inter Milan to compete directly with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right side of Madrid\u2019s defence.<\/p>\n
Alexander-Arnold is set to enter his second campaign at Madrid and will expect to establish himself after an injury-riddled debut season.<\/p>\n
However, Mourinho\u2019s appointment for his second stint as manager means the former Liverpool defender would be wise to take nothing for granted.<\/p>\n
Alexander-Arnold\u2019s position is under threat<\/p>\n
Alexander-Arnold\u2019s ability on the ball is not in dispute. However, he has repeatedly demonstrated that he is not an elite-level defender.<\/p>\n
Dumfries is more direct, using his pace and physical power to overlap, attack the penalty area and make aggressive off-the-ball runs beyond the winger.<\/p>\n
Alexander-Arnold\u2019s passing range gives Madrid a useful string to their bow. Dumfries is far from perfect as a right back, but he is better defensively.<\/p>\n
Matches against dangerous transitional teams may push Mourinho towards Dumfries, particularly when maintaining natural width and defensive recovery speed is more important.<\/p>\n
Madrid have already experimented during pre-season with both players in the same starting XI during the recent 2-2 friendly against Fiorentina.<\/p>\n
That experiment underlines how Mourinho may view their differences as an advantage rather than a selection headache.<\/p>\n
Dumfries offers an attacking threat Alexander-Arnold cannot replicate<\/p>\n
Alexander-Arnold is comfortably the better passer, but Dumfries provides another form of attacking threat that be invaluable alongside Madrid\u2019s forwards.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands international, a relatively inexpensive signing this summer<\/a> (like Trent last season), has spent much of his career functioning almost as an additional attacker when his team has possession, particularly during his time as a wing-back with Inter.<\/p>\n Dumfries regularly attacks the back post, makes runs behind defensive lines and provides an aerial target that most opposition full-backs cannot comfortably handle.<\/p>\n That profile could complement Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior because Madrid already have players who naturally want the ball to feet and move towards central positions.<\/p>\n Rather than adding another creator into those congested areas, Dumfries can stretch the opposition in ways that Alexander-Arnold rarely achieves.<\/p>\n His productivity supports the argument. The Dutchman left Inter with 55 direct goal contributions in 207 appearances, an unusually high return for a defender.<\/p>\n He was also influential internationally, bagging two goals and three assists across six matches in the most recent World Cup qualifying campaign.<\/p>\n By contrast, Alexander-Arnold was omitted from the England squad this summer, with manager Thomas Tuchel doubting his defensive ability.<\/p>\n Alexander-Arnold has not yet made the position his own<\/p>\n Dumfries would probably face a much harder route into the team if Alexander-Arnold had enjoyed an outstanding first campaign in Madrid.<\/p>\n Alexander-Arnold made 30 appearances across all competitions last season, producing three assists in 1,792 minutes. Only 14 of his 21 La Liga appearances came as a starter.<\/p>\n A muscular problem in December followed another lengthy injury earlier in the season, leaving him repeatedly trying to regain rhythm rather than building continuity.<\/p>\n Madrid are traditionally impatient with players when competition is available in a position. They have that in abundance with Dumfries in the squad.<\/p>\n Dumfries has played regularly at the highest level for Inter and knows how to operate within demanding defensive structures.<\/p>\n By contrast, Alexander-Arnold enters Mourinho\u2019s first season effectively having to prove himself again under another manager.<\/p>\n Dumfries could be the winner of this 50-50 battle<\/p>\n Alexander-Arnold may have an advantage because his passing ability gives Madrid something no other defender in the squad can easily replicate.<\/p>\n Despite this, Madrid have not spent around \u20ac20 million on an experienced international right-back merely to provide emergency cover.<\/p>\n The club deliberately targeted Dumfries to provide serious competition for a player who many people believe is destined to fail in Spanish football.<\/p>\n Mourinho has traditionally valued players capable of carrying out clearly defined defensive responsibilities while also possessing the physical qualities to survive transitions.<\/p>\n Dumfries fits that description extremely well, while Alexander-Arnold\u2019s defensive weaknesses have repeatedly been exposed. Mourinho<\/a> may not tolerate his deficiencies.<\/p>\n Alexander-Arnold\u2019s creativity makes him the obvious choice against weaker opponents, but Dumfries is a genuine alternative against the top teams.<\/p>\n Dumfries does not need to become a better footballer than Alexander-Arnold. He simply needs to be the better right-back for most of Mourinho\u2019s game plans.<\/p>\n If that happens regularly during the opening months of the campaign, Dumfries may ultimately prove to be the manager\u2019s favoured option at right-back.<\/p>\n
