He also made his mark for their semiprofessional affiliate AS Frenzi, winning the 2023 UPSL title and taking home the Playoff MVP and Golden Boot.<\/p>\nAfter failing to secure a permanent move, Diomande returned to Abidjan after his student visa expired, but it wasn\u2019t long before Spanish side Legan\u00e9s came calling. Diomande quickly went from the reserves to the first team and made his debut at Real Madrid on March 29, 2025, playing 10 times before earning a \u20ac20 million move to RB Leipzig. When the 2025\/26 season started, Diomande was an unknown teenager who hadn\u2019t yet completed a full season of professional football. By the time it ended, he had won the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award and debuted for his country and competed in the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup.<\/p>\n
Now, he\u2019s set to test his skills in the UEFA Champions League for Real Madrid, who have signed him for \u20ac125 million plus \u20ac15 million in add-ons. But just what makes Diomande such a special talent, and is he worth the investment? We spoke to his former coach Todd Eason in an exclusive Managing Madrid interview:<\/p>\n
What are your thoughts on Diomande\u2019s transfer to Real Madrid, and do you think he\u2019s going to justify the massive outlay that they\u2019re paying to sign him?<\/p>\n
\u201cI guess you have to look at the two different leagues that he\u2019s played in. He was in La Liga, and excelled with one of the bottom-half teams in Legan\u00e9s, and then he went to the Bundesliga and really excelled for Leipzig throughout that season, two teams where the styles of play for both are a little bit different. The funny thing is a lot of people were saying, \u2018If he goes to Liverpool, can he handle the physicality of the English game and the Premier League?\u2019 I mean, he can, but that was one thing that he hasn\u2019t really been tested on: the physicality of the game that some countries can present. Going back to La Liga, he\u2019s familiar with what that is, and he\u2019s going to be completely fine with securing a starting role with Real, because if you look at the front three, even though that Dio doesn\u2019t have the name yet, he\u2019s got the talent. That\u2019s going to be a top-three line that you won\u2019t see in many clubs, so I\u2019m excited to see him with that. He\u2019s familiar with La Liga, and I think he\u2019s going to be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
It seemed like Diomande would be linking up with World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri, but ultimately, he looks set to go to Barcelona instead. Just how big of a blow is that for Real and Diomande?<\/p>\n
\u201cRodri is a guy that I think can manage his own space, and clip a ball 50 yards for Dio to bring it down on his foot and run at someone 1v1. He\u2019s going to be a nice outlet for midfielders to have, to be able to clip balls into Dio, who brings them down comfortably and runs with confidence. That front three\u2026I would not want to be a defender against them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Two years after coaching Diomande in Florida, your former pupil is going to be playing under Jos\u00e9 Mourinho at Real Madrid. How do you think his game will fare under the Portuguese manager?<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, that\u2019s a different coaching style\u2026Mourinho has that reputation of going up a goal and kind of sitting back and playing it safe. I think Diomande can do that if he\u2019s told; he\u2019ll do whatever you tell him to do. Even when he played with Legan\u00e9s, he had to sit back sometimes, because he couldn\u2019t really get into space as he was sitting in more of a defensive shape. If that\u2019s what Mourinho asks of him, he\u2019s going to do it. I\u2019m trying to think of all of Mourinho\u2019s teams in the past; they\u2019ve all been kind of defensive-minded, and I can\u2019t remember all the strikers that Mourinho\u2019s had at his disposal, but it\u2019s going to be hard to keep Vini, Dio, and Mbapp\u00e9 in a defensive shape. They\u2019re going to want to run and and cause issues, but Dio does whatever you tell him. I mean, he would even do things I told him, and they were probably wrong, but, he respects the management, and he\u2019ll do what\u2019s being asked of him, because he wants to play.
