A magnitude 5 earthquake struck the southern Spanish city of Granada early Saturday, damaging buildings and cars but causing no reported injuries, according to regional authorities.<\/p>\n
The earthquake hit the metropolitan area of Alhend\u00edn shortly after 1am local time, sending debris onto streets and damaging vehicles in the popular tourist city, Reuters<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n Spanish television broadcaster TVE showed debris scattered across roads and images of damaged cars following the tremor.<\/p>\n Andalusian emergency services also rescued several people from buildings that were damaged in the earthquake.<\/p>\n Antonio Sanz Cabello, vice-president of the Andalusian regional government, said authorities had declared an emergency following the quake.<\/p>\n He urged residents in Granada who felt the earthquake but were safe and whose homes appeared undamaged to remain calm and avoid unnecessary movement in and out of buildings.<\/p>\n Sanz also warned people outdoors to stay away from building facades, cornices, balconies, walls and other structures that could collapse or shed debris.<\/p>\n Authorities were assessing the extent of the damage as emergency teams continued to respond across the affected area.<\/p>\n Granada is a popular tourist destination in southern Spain<\/a>, known for landmarks including the Alhambra palace complex.<\/p>\n
