The strong shaking was also felt in several provinces of Andalusia, causing moments of alarm among the population.

The earthquake occurred at 1:04 a.m. and had its epicenter approximately one kilometer southwest of the municipality of Otura, in the Granada metropolitan area. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) initially placed the magnitude at 5.0, although other reports raised the intensity of the earthquake to 5.2.

So far, no fatalities or injuries have been reported, but emergency teams remain deployed to assess possible damage.

5.2-magnitude earthquake shakes Southern Spain

The first hours after the earthquake produced images showing some of the effects caused by the shaking. In Granada, falling building elements, debris, and damage to facades and roofs were reported. In one reported case, part of the fallen material landed on a vehicle parked next to a residential building.

Emergency teams began inspecting buildings to determine whether the structures posed any risk to their occupants. Authorities urged citizens to stay away from facades, cornices, balconies, and walls that may have been damaged and could cause further falling debris.

Andalusia’s 112 emergency service received more than 80 calls related to the earthquake during the first few hours. The reports were mainly related to property damage and situations resulting from the strong shaking that surprised residents while they were sleeping.

The intensity of the earthquake allowed it to be felt far beyond the area near the epicenter. The shaking was felt at various points across Andalusia, especially in Granada, Malaga, the coast of Almeria, and some areas of Jaen. Subsequent reports also indicated that the movement was felt in numerous municipalities across the region.

The main seismic event was preceded by other, less intense movements. During the previous eight hours, at least four earthquakes were recorded, with magnitudes ranging from 2.2 to 3.7, in locations across the Granada metropolitan area. This activity increased residents’ concern and led authorities to maintain heightened monitoring of the phenomenon’s development.

Granada registra un terremoto de magnitud 5,0.
