Seville hotel<\/a> is like nothing we’ve ever seen before, and that’s saying something. In the world of hospitality, where everything seems to have already been invented, La Casa del Limonero arrives to make you feel things \u2013 excitement, surprise, impact, fascination. This is a historic six-century-old palace that stands majestically in the heart of the Santa Cruz neighbourhood, one of Seville’s most authentic areas. Under new ownership since 2015, it has undergone a rigorous process of renovation, restoration, and conservation \u2014 during the six years of work, which began in 2017, incredible vestiges were unearthed \u2014 to become what it is today: an example of exclusivity where bedrooms and common areas are both a unified whole and, at the same time, completely independent. Much of this is due to the property’s immense private art collection, which has been skillfully distributed throughout every corner, while designer furniture blends perfectly with medieval walls and the 17th-century Mud\u00e9jar-style tiles.<\/p>\nThe backstory<\/p>\n
The building we see today was indeed erected in the 15th century, but even since then, the various owners have left behind details that allow us to tell its story. Part of it can be seen on the wall of the lobby upon entering the hotel: an immense pavement of 15th-century Sevillian and Valencian tiles, crafted using the almatraya technique, was discovered beneath the floor in perfect condition during recent renovations. Its exceptional beauty led the owners to display it for all to see. It combines Gothic and Nasrid motifs and dates from a time when the house was inhabited by the Marmolejo family, Jewish converts who sought to express their early beliefs in this floor, in some way. The hotel’s central courtyard is surrounded by arches and porticoes that reflect Mud\u00e9jar influences, albeit with a more modern feel. One of the last owners of the palatial house was F\u00e9lix Moreno de la Cova, mayor of Seville in the late 1970s. The space that once housed his office is now one of the hotel’s most unique rooms, named the Cabinet of Curiosities.<\/p>\n
THE ROOMS<\/p>\n
There are 14 rooms set across the three floors of the building, each have been adapted to existing spaces and highlighting the unique characteristics of each, so no two rooms are alike. Each room has a number carved in olive wood at the entrance, and all have been given a name that captures the essence of what they are \u2013 Cabinet of Curiosities, with shelves overflowing with peculiar objects and items, or Maestranza, where vibrant colours burst forth in homage to the bullfighting world so deeply rooted in Seville. A piece by the Colombian artist Olga de Amaral hangs once again above the headboard in the Tropical room, where the furnishings are comprised of items from various travels: 19th-century Chinese armchairs, a Brazilian coffee table, and a 17th-century Venetian mirror. The house’s only duplex is called Safari, which features furniture that evokes Mother Earth and Andalusian tiles decorating the walls.<\/p>\n
Food and drink<\/p>\n
Visiting the various spaces that make up La Casa del Limonero will, sooner or later, lead you to discover its beautiful kitchen. While the hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, it does offer guests a selection of appetisers and snacks ranging from local cured meats and cheeses to salads and sandwiches, always accompanied by the finest wine. Just a few steps from the kitchen is the elegant dining room. This inviting space is where part of the breakfast buffet is served each morning, featuring homemade pastries, a variety of breads, local olive oil, rich coffees, granola, fruit, and yoghurt. Fresh orange juice and citrus financiers are made daily with fruit picked straight from the garden.<\/p>\n
