MADRID, Aug 19 (Reuters) – At least 10 earthquakes struck Granada in southern Spain overnight, authorities said on Wednesday, continuing \u200cseismic activity that began in the region five days \u200cago and has caused light injuries and damage to buildings.<\/p>\n
Many shops, churches and \u200bmuseums were closed while the local government shuttered offices as a precaution. Local media reported that some residents fled to the coast while others opted to stay outdoors for fear of structures collapsing.<\/p>\n
The \u200cstrongest quake of \u2060the sequence was of magnitude 3.4 at 10.35 p.m. on Tuesday, with its epicentre in Ogijares, 7 \u2060km (4 miles) south of Granada city, according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN).<\/p>\n
It was followed by nine tremors between 1.5 and 2.5 magnitude \u200band dozens \u200bof smaller aftershocks.<\/p>\n
Health services said \u200bthey treated 14 cases \u2014 mostly \u200cpanic or anxiety attacks \u2014 and more than 500 calls were made to emergency services. About 600 people were evacuated from apartment blocks that required inspection, Andalusian official Antonio Sanz told reporters on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
“There’s clearly no imminent danger and the public hasn’t been \u200cat risk,” Sanz said, adding that \u200bit was still impossible to determine the \u200bfull extent of the \u200bdamage, though preliminary assessments suggested it was limited \u200cto cornices and facades rather than \u200bserious structural issues.<\/p>\n
Paqui \u200bValero, a resident of Albolote on Granada’s outskirts, told local newspaper Ideal that she and her partner abandoned work \u200bto drive south \u200cwith their two children on a jammed highway.<\/p>\n
“I felt a \u200blot of panic,” she said.<\/p>\n
