A childhood spent far from society shaped a life unlike any other, marked by survival, wild animals, and an uneasy return to the human world.<\/p>\n
Marcos Rodr\u00edguez Pantoja, known as the \u201cwolf boy of Sierra Morena,\u201d has died in Spain at the age of 80. He had lived in the village of Rante since 2001. Local authorities in San Cibrao das Vi\u00f1as announced his death.<\/p>\n
Childhood in the Sierra Morena Mountains<\/p>\n
Rodr\u00edguez Pantoja spent his childhood in the isolated mountain regions of southern Spain. After his mother died, his brothers and sisters were taken in by relatives, while he remained with his father. His father later remarried and moved the family to Sierra Morena, where he worked in charcoal production.<\/p>\n
RTVE reported that his stepmother treated the boy cruelly. When he was seven years old, his father handed him over to an elderly goatherd. The man taught the child how to milk goats, keep warm with animal skins, and catch rabbits with a stick.<\/p>\n
They took me to the mountains, to a cave. A little old man with a beard and cork shoes came out from there.<\/p>\n

After the goatherd suddenly disappeared, Rodr\u00edguez Pantoja was left alone in the mountains. He survived using the skills he had learned earlier. According to him, he later managed to gain the trust of a wolf pack: he brought food to the cubs and warned the animals of danger by howling.<\/p>\n

12 Years in the Wild<\/p>\n
Professor Gabriel Janer Manila of the University of Palma de Mallorca researched Rodr\u00edguez Pantoja\u2019s story and concluded that he spent 12 years in the wild. He learned to imitate the sounds of birds and deer, and believed he could easily communicate with foxes, wolves, and even snakes.<\/p>\n
In 1965, when Rodr\u00edguez Pantoja was 19, he was discovered by the Guardia Civil among the ravines of Sierra Morena. After returning to society, he lived with a priest in Ja\u00e9n, with nuns in Madrid, completed military service, and later worked in hotels and restaurants in Mallorca.<\/p>\n

The Story of Marcos Rodr\u00edguez Pantoja<\/p>\n
In the final years of his life, Rodr\u00edguez Pantoja spoke about his experiences in an effort to draw attention to nature conservation. His fate inspired Gabriel Janer Manila\u2019s book \u201cI Played with Wolves\u201d and also became the basis for the film \u201cAmong Wolves.\u201d<\/p>\n
Arturo Arcones, who knew Rodr\u00edguez Pantoja in his later years, said that he considered his time living among wolves to be the happiest period of his life. He felt less comfortable among people. At the same time, his neighbours in Rante supported him, particularly during the final two years of his illness.<\/p>\n
Marcos arrived in Rante with a story known throughout the world. He leaves behind a story here that is also ours.<\/p>\n
