After Week 1 of the high school football season, the Thompson Warriors, Spain Park Jaguars and Briarwood Christian Lions all remain ranked in the Alabama Sportswriters Association\u2019s media top 10.<\/p>\n
When the rankings were released on Wednesday, Aug. 26, Thompson maintained its unanimous No. 1 spot in Class 6A, Spain Park dropped three spots to No. 9 in the same rankings and Briarwood boosted up one spot to No. 2 in Class Double AA.<\/p>\n
The Warriors stayed in first with 240 points coming off all 20 first-place votes. They kept their hold on the top spot with a 41-14 victory over then-No. 2 Central-Phenix City in the AHSAA Kickoff Classic, which included a 21-0 finish in the second half.<\/p>\n
The Red Devils fell one spot to No. 3 behind Vestavia Hills, which moved up to No. 2 with a victory over Parker. The Rebels were one of the notable movers in this week\u2019s poll, but the biggest move went to Hewitt-Trussville, which went from unranked to No. 5 with a win over No. 7 Auburn High School, which was No. 3 entering the year.<\/p>\n
Thompson will face a big test in Class 5A\u2019s unanimous top team, the Clay-Chalkville Cougars, in a battle of defending state champions. The two teams will clash on Thursday, Aug. 27 at Warrior Stadium.<\/p>\n
The Warriors are also ranked in three different national polls. They are No. 9 in Rivals\u2019 Massey Rankings, No. 14 in the High School Football America 300 and No. 20 in the MaxPreps rankings, the latter of which is up four spots. Thompson and Clay-Chalkville are both ranked in the top 20 of the HSFA poll.<\/p>\n
Spain Park dropped three spots from a joint tie with No. 6 Hoover into the No. 9 ranking in Class 6A. The Jags remain undefeated at 1-0, but they faced a major test in Sparkman, who they defeated 17-13 in a tight road battle.<\/p>\n
Spain Park earned 60 ranking points, eight behind new No. 8 Prattville. The Jags are the sixth team from Class 6A, Region 3 in the top nine of the ASWA rankings, with only Oak Mountain and Tuscaloosa County unranked from the region.<\/p>\n
Now, Spain Park will face the Bessemer City Purple Tigers on Aug. 28 at Bob Finley Field. The Purple Tigers received eight points in the Class 5A rankings, which was not enough for a top 10 position.<\/p>\n
Rounding out the county\u2019s top 10 teams was Briarwood, which moved up one spot to No. 2 in Class Double AA. The Lions received 198 points, including six first-place votes after receiving none in the preseason poll. They remain only behind McGill-Toolen Catholic, which took 13 of the other 14 first-place votes.<\/p>\n
Briarwood got a big boost after a massive 35-7 statement win over the defending Class 5A state champion Moody Blue Devils. Moody defeated the Lions 51-21 in the Class 5A quarterfinals last year, albeit with former coach Jake Ganus at the helm.<\/p>\n
The Blue Devils crashed out of the Class 4A top 10 and only received 13 points, the 12th-most of any team in 4A.<\/p>\n
Briarwood will look for another headline-grabbing win when it hosts the Class 5A No. 4 Homewood Patriots on Aug. 28 at Lions Pride Stadium.<\/p>\n
Vincent previously received votes in the Class 2A poll but dropped off the list after losing its opener to Winterboro. The Jackets will look to bounce back against B.B. Comer on Aug. 28 at Legion Stadium.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere in the state, two classifications received new No. 1 teams. Fyffe is the No. 1 team in Class 2A after a thrilling win over now-Class 4A No. 5 Central-Clay County, taking over from Piedmont which lost to Class 4A No. 10 Jacksonville.<\/p>\n
In the AISA, Patrician took over as the unanimous No. 1 after beating previous No. 1 Chambers Academy in a battle of the top two teams in the AISA. Chambers plays in Class AAA while Patrician is in Class AA.<\/p>\n
