{"id":7674,"date":"2026-04-19T16:11:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T16:11:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/7674\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T16:11:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T16:11:31","slug":"spains-incredible-400m-train-line-connects-airport-to-tourist-town-world-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/7674\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain\u2019s incredible \u00a3400m train line &#8211; connects airport to tourist town | World | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">A 19-mile, partly underground new <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/railway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">train<\/a> line in <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/majorca\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Majorca<\/a> has been given final approval by the Balearic Islands authorities and will connect the island&#8217;s capital with <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/europe\/2193445\/brits-only-lane-launched-spanish-airport-amid-new-border-rule-chaos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its airport<\/a> and another major tourist town. The new Servicios Ferroviarios de Mallorca (SFM) line will have over six of its 19-mile length pass underground and will have 13 stations, connecting Palma, Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) and <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/2143231\/majorca-unethical-tourist-railway-protests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Llucmajor<\/a> on the south coast.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">The new railway line, which is expected to be operational in 2032, will connect the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/articles\/2194805\/majorca-holiday-cost-more-14-days-caribbean\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Balearic capital<\/a> with Llucmajor in 30 minutes, with Son Ll\u00e0tzer Hospital in six minutes and with the airport in 12 minutes, terminating at a station to be integrated into Son Sant Joan. \u201cWe want public transport to be an alternative to private transport,\u201d Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility, Jos\u00e9 Luis Mateo, said at a press conference outlining the plans on Wednesday (April 15). He said the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/infrastructure\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new train line<\/a> represents a &#8220;decisive step&#8221; in that project.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">The Director-General for Mobility, Lorena del Valle, explained that the new train line will have 13 stations \u2013 10 of them in <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/articles\/2124738\/british-airways-announces-new-flight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palma<\/a> and another three in Llucmajor \u2013 connecting residential and industrial areas as well as the airport. The stations in Palma will be Conservatori, Son Costa, Miquel Dol\u00e7, Son G\u00fcells, Hospital Son Ll\u00e0tzer, Coll d\u2019en Rabassa, Aeroport, Son Oms, La Porcinc\u00fala and Bellavista-Ses Cadenes, whilst those in Llucmajor will be s\u2019Arenal, Son Noguera and the station in the town centre itself.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 20 trains will be purchased for the line and it is expected to carry 8.5 million passengers each year &#8211; a 73% increase in passenger numbers on the Majorcan rail network compared to the 11.6 million recorded in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the only rail infrastructure project underway in Majorca. Mr Mateo also confirmed that at the current pace, the regional government maintains its forecast that work on the line between Palma and Llucmajor will begin in 2028. He also highlighted airport authority <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/articles\/2194796\/spanish-airport-shutting-flights-cancelled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aena\u2019s<\/a> willingness to finalise the location of the Palma Airport station, whilst Ms del Valle added that the underground route will be feasible thanks to its construction using a tunnel boring machine.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2024, the Balearic president, Marga Prohens, presented the railway project with a budget of \u20ac690million (\u00a3600million), covering construction, the purchase of new <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/trains\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trains<\/a> and the building of workshops. Construction is expected to begin in 2028 and last approximately four years.<\/p>\n<p>Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, has a combined rail network of approximately 55 miles (88km), including both train and metro track, operated by Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) and the private S\u00f3ller Railway.
